Wimbledon champion, Simona Halep is set be the flag-bearer for Romania at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games as she continues to bask in the aftermath of her sensational success at the All England Club.

Halep became the first Romanian to win Wimbledon after her stunning 6-2 6-2 victory over Serena Williams on Saturday.

The 27-year-old returned home to jubilant scenes on Monday, where she was welcomed by family and friends, as well as several Romanian dignitaries at the official lounge of the Henri Coanda Airport in Bucharest.

"I hope to be an inspiration to the young generation. Make them believe in themselves, that everything is possible and never give up", Halep said. "Every time I play I feel the whole public is with me. I don't doubt this in the least, because people have always shown me unconditional support”.
“I will place the Wimbledon trophy next to the Roland Garros one. It's more important than when I became World No. 1. A Grand Slam tournament is always more important and more special to the players".

Among those present at the ceremony were the Minister of Youth and Sports, Bogdan Matei, President of the Romanian Tennis Federation, Ion Tiriac, and President of the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee, Mihai Covaliu.

Halep said she had asked Covaliu if she could carry the flag for her country at next year's Olympics, and that the Romanian Olympic chief agreed. The Wimbledon champion further expressed her desire to win an Olympic medal, stating that it is a main objective.

Halep has also been awarded the Order of the Star of Romania- the highest distinction in the country, while she was honoured with the Patriarchal Cross by the Orthodox Church- also the church's highest honour.

"As a result of the extraordinary performance at the Wimbledon tennis tournament and as a sign of recognition and appreciation for the whole activity, the President of Romania, Mr. Klaus Iohannis, has decided to award the highest award of the Romanian State, the National Order Steaua României in the Rank of the Knight, to the tennis player Simona Halep”, the Romanian presidential administration stated in a press release in the wake of Halep's Wimbledon success”.
"Through her dedication, devotion and professionalism, confirmed both on the tennis court and out of the court, Simona Halep has promoted our country's name all over the world. Simona Halep is a model for the younger generation, and her involvement in popularizing tennis among children is a huge gain for the Romanian sports."

Halep will be hosted to a celebratory event at the National Arena in Bucharest on Wednesday.
