Halep had been scheduled to be part of a quality Zhengzhou field, which also includes top-ten stars, Kiki Bertens and Elina Svitolina, but the Romanian has opted out of the tournament due to an ankle complaint.

Halep last played at the US Open where she suffered a shock 2-6 7-6 6-3 defeat to American, Taylor Townsend in the second round.

She subsequently withdrew from the mixed doubles event at Flushing Meadows, where she had been billed to partner compatriot, Horia Tecau.

“I'm disappointed to withdraw from the Zhengzhou Open as I was looking forward to playing in a new city for the first time,” the former world No. 1 said. “Unfortunately, I have been experiencing pain in my left ankle and my medical team has advised me it would be best not to play next week. I wish the tournament every success in its first year and hope to be back next year.”

Halep has had her injury problems in the last month- her Rogers Cup title defence ended in retirement as she quit her quarter final tie against Czech, Marie Bouzkova due to a foot problem. She recovered in time to play Cincinnati and the US Open, but made very little impact in both tournaments, and is now back on the sidelines to nurse her ankle.

The Romanian began the year under an injury cloud, having missed the final three months of the previous campaign due to a back problem. She was beaten by Ashleigh Barty in her first match of the year in Sydney, but she got better as the season progressed, reaching finals in Doha and Madrid before claiming the Wimbledon title in July.

She hasn't quite had things her way since Wimbledon, going 4-3 between Toronto, Cincinnati and New York, and now having to sit out Zhengzhou.

The Zhengzhou draw features seven players in the world's top 25, including Chinese No. 1, Qiang Wang, who recently reached a maiden Grand Slam quarter final at the US Open before losing to Serena Williams.

The Zhengzhou Open is live from 9-15 September.
