Sofia Kenin goes for her third WTA Tour title of her breakthrough 2019 season at the Guangzhou International Women’s Open on Saturday, with Samantha Stosur standing in her way.

This is already Kenin’s fourth final of a brilliant season which saw her capture the titles in Hobart (d. Anna Karolina Schmiedlova) and Mallorca (d. Belinda Bencic) and finish runner-up to Wang Yafan in Acapulco. The American also made the semifinals of the Premier-5 Rogers Cup in Toronto and the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati in August and reached the last 16 of the US Open, among other highlights from a 43-19 season that has seen her rise to her current, career-best ranking of world no. 20 after starting the season outside the top 50.

One of only two seeds to reach the quarterfinal in Guangzhou and the only one to make the semifinals, Kenin dropped the first set of her tournament on Friday against Anna Blinkova, but eventually snapped the Russian’s eight-match winning streak 7-6(2), 4-6, 6-1, adding to victories over Laura Siegemund, Katarina Zavatska and Jasmine Paolini at the International-level event.
Kenin, who will rise to a new career-high ranking of world no. 18 or higher on Monday and will face Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the first round of next week’s Wuhan Open, has lost both her previous meetings with her opponent in Saturday’s final, Samantha Stosur.

‘I'm very happy to be in the final. It's beem a great year and I'm really proud of myself,’ Kenin said. ‘Sam is a really tough player. I've played her twice and I've lose to her twice. She's having a really good tournament and playing really good tennis.

‘We're both going to fight for the title, but I'm going to try and relax... and see how it goes tomorrow.’

Stosur might lead the head-to-head, but she is at a significant disadvantage in terms of recent experience. While Kenin is playing her fourth final of 2019, the veteran has not been to a WTA Tour final in well over two years.

Famously a US Open champion in 2011, Stosur, now 35, was ranked as high as world no. 4 back in her heyday but it has been about 18 months since she ranked inside the top 50 and slipped out of the top 100 back in June after losing in the second round of the French Open.

Stosur has had plenty of injury issues, most recently a stress fracture in her hand, and is only 15-21 in 2019, with her best results reaching the third round of Miami, the second round of Eastbourne as a qualifier and the quarterfinals of Lausanne. After losing last week to Nina Stojanovic in the second round of Nanchang, Stosur came into Guangzhou ranked world no. 129 – but now should break back into the top 100 after her run to the final.

It’s been a great week for the Australian, whose patient effort is paying off as she has scored a series of good wins in Guangzhou. She beat qualifier Tereza Martincova before edging Bernarda Pera in three very tight sets, and avenged her Nanchang defeat to Stojanovic in the quarterfinals. Up against Switzerland’s Viktoria Golubjic, who ousted Zhang Shuai in the previous round, in the semifinals Stosur trailed early but turned round the match in a second-set tie-break to win 2-6, 7-6(4), 6-1.

‘I just tried to hang in there and find a way to start playing a bit better,’ Stosur said. ‘She's very tough to play against so I'm just happy to get through.

‘This is where everyone wants to be, so to now make it to the final, I'm really happy and I'll give it my best shot tomorrow.’

This is Stosur’s first final since she won Strasbourg in 2017 – and she doesn’t have a great record in finals, going 9-15 through her career. She hasn’t won a hard-court title since playing in Osaka in 2014, and although she is 2-0 vs Kenin, beating her in Strasbourg in 2018 and Eastbourne in 2019, both matches came on natural surfaces. Hard courts are a different kettle of fish. Stosur feels like she has nothing to lose, but Kenin is so solid. It could go either way, but I expect a three-set battle.
