Kerber last won a match at Wimbledon, where she defeated fellow German, Tatjana Maria in the first round, but her title defence at the All England Club was terminated in the second round, when she fell in three sets to American, Lauren Davis.

Since then, the three-time major winner has suffered four consecutive opening round defeats, losing to Daria Kasatkina in Toronto, Anett Kontaveit in Cincinnati, Kristina Mladenovic at the US Open, and most recently, Alison Riske in a final set tie break in Zhengzhou last week.

Kerber certainly had her chances against Riske in Zhengzhou, as she led by a set and 2-0, served for the match at 6-5 in the final set, and held a match point at 6-5 in the ensuing tie break, but she failed to close it out and succumbed to another tough loss.

Kerber is still seeking her first title of the season, with her best result being a runner-up finish at Indian Wells, where she was beaten by Bianca Andreescu, while she made semi-finals in Doha and Monterrey. The 31-year-old was bothered by an ankle injury during the clay-court season, lasting just one match in Madrid before withdrawing; and pulling out of Rome altogether. She was beaten by Anastasia Potapova in the first round at Roland Garros.

Kerber picked up the pace significantly on grass, reaching the semi-finals in Mallorca, and the final in Eastbourne, emerging as one of the favourites at Wimbledon as a consequence, but her title defence at SW19 ended in disappointment, and she has been struggling since then.

Kerber has fallen to No. 15 in the world, but she's got a chance to gain some ranking spots this week, as she didn't play in the corresponding week last year. The German starts against Gibbs on Wednesday.

Gibbs already has three wins in Osaka this week, beating Ayano Shimizu and fellow American, Whitney Osuigwe in the qualifying rounds before taking down, quite ironically, Kerber's Zhengzhou conqueror, Alison Riske 6-4 6-3 in the first round of the main draw.

This is only her second tour-level main draw appearance of the season, the other being the US Open, where she pushed Simona Halep very hard before bowing out in three sets. She lost in qualifying rounds at Brisbane, the Australian Open, Indian Wells and Toronto.

Gibbs missed a significant portion of the clay and grass court seasons, including Roland Garros and Wimbledon, after being diagnosed with a rare form of salivary gland cancer, which required surgery, but she has overcome that health scare and has been playing some decent tennis in recent weeks. She reached the quarter finals at the WTA 125K meet in New Haven at the start of September, before producing this current run in Osaka.

The 26-year-old possesses a career-high ranking of 68th, attained in July 2016, but she has been out of the world's top 100 since March 2017, and is currently 137th in the world.

Wednesday's meeting with Kerber is Gibbs' first against the former world No. 1, and the American has got a wonderful opportunity here, as Kerber has not been at her best and must be short of confidence given her recent run of results. Gibbs is a fantastic competitor, and must take plenty of encouragement from her victory over Riske in the opening round. I reckon she has got a good shot at scoring her first top-20 win here.

Angelique Kerber vs Nicole Gibbs is live from Osaka on Wednesday, 18 September from 11:00am local time/ 3:00am BST
