  • Pliskova leads 1-0 on head-to-head

Svetlana Kuznetsova continues her comeback from injury on Friday when she takes on Kristyna Pliskova in the quarter finals of the Samsung Open in Lugano.

Kuznetsova is playing her first tournament since last September, after being kept away from the courts by a knee injury.

That knee has been put through the ringer in Lugano, with both of her matches so far going the distance. First, she needed almost two and a half hours to get past compatriot, Ekaterina Alexandrova in the first round, while she edged out two-time Roland Garros semi-finalist, Timea Bacsinszky 7-5 3-6 6-4 in the second round. Kuznetsova trailed by a set and a break against Bacsinszky, but from 2-1 down in the second set, she won five of the next six games to even the match. The two-time major champion got the early break in the deciding set for a 2-1 lead, and she maintained that advantage for the rest of the encounter, winning in two hours and 7 minutes to set up Friday's meeting with Kristyna Pliskova.

Former world No. 2 is now down at 109th in the world majorly due to her spell on the sidelines, but she is projected to return to the top 100 next Monday after her Lugano run. Just as she missed the start of 2019, Kuznetsova also sat out the opening two months of 2018 due to wrist surgery. She struggled for results on her return to the tour, winning back-to-back matches just once, and four matches overall in the first ten tournaments of her comeback. She made a quite spectacular return to form in Washington, beating Donna Vekic to claim her 18th career title. That return to form was short-lived, as she played just three more tournaments before going on her lengthy injury lay-off.

She has made a much better comeback than she made last season- can she go even further by taking down Pliskova on Friday?

Pliskova is through to her first quarter final of the season following straight sets victories over Yiena In-Albon and Antonia Lottner in Lugano.

The Czech had won just two tour-level matches in 2019- in Shenzhen and at the Australian Open- but she has fired blanks since then, losing tournament openers in Doha, Miami and Charleston. She also lost in the qualifying rounds in Dubai and Indian Wells. While she is yet to reach a quarter final on the main tour, Pliskova has made the last eight in a couple of WTA 125 tournaments at Indian Wells and Guadalajara.

The left-hander has a career-high ranking of 35th, attained in 2017. She began last season just outside the top-60, and made a few quarter finals in Shenzhen, Charleston, Prague and Nurnberg in a decent opening half of the season, but she won just two main draw tour-level matches between Roland Garros and the end of the season in an alarming drop in form, and was down at 94th by the end of the year.

That ranking has not been helped by her ordinary start to the 2019, as she drifted to 101 heading into the Samsung Open in Lugano. She's had some respite from her WTA struggles in Lugano, scoring consecutive wins for the first time since May 2018. A first WTA semi-final since Prague in May 2018 will be the prize if she beats Svetlana Kuznetsova on Friday.

Pliskova won their only previous meeting at Wimbledon in 2015, and she is definitely capable of producing big performances like that, albeit very sporadically. She doesn't have the consistency of her twin, Karolina, but she is powerful, and when it comes together, she is very dangerous. I believe Kuznetsova is there for the taking on Friday, as she has only just returned from injury and has had two relatively lengthy matches. But can Pliskova deliver a performance that can take advantage of any potential tiredness on the other side of the net?
