World No. 1, Naomi Osaka has split with coach Sascha Bajin just over two weeks after winning the Australian Open.

Osaka made the shock announcement on Social Media, thanking Bajin for his work, but no reason was given for the split.

Bajin responded to the post via his own Social Media account, thanking the Japanese star in return for letting him be a part of her success and wishing her the best moving forward.

Osaka teamed up with Bajin during the 2017 off-season, and under his guidance, the Japanese produced a stunning 2018, highlighted by her sensational triumph at the US Open, where she beat Serena Williams in the final. Osaka had claimed her maiden career title in similarly remarkable fashion at Indian Wells earlier in the year, beating Maria Sharapova, Karolina Pliskova and Simona Halep along the way in a fearless display of power hitting. She also made the final in Tokyo, the semi-finals in Beijing and qualified for the season-ending WTA Finals in Singapore for the first time. The 21-year-old peaked at No.4 in the world and finished the season at No. 5, having being ranked 72nd in January.

The partnership continued to blossom at the start of 2019, with Osaka securing consecutive Grand Slam titles by winning the Australian Open, and rising to the top of the world ranking as a consequence.

Bajin won the inaugural WTA coach of the year in 2018, and had previously said he was with Osaka for the long haul, but that will no longer be the case after Monday’s announcement. The 34-year-old had previously worked as a hitting partner for Serena Williams and a hitting partner/consultant for Caroline Wozniacki, Sloane Stephens, and Victoria Azarenka.

Osaka is currently sidelined with a back injury, which forced her to miss the on-going Qatar Open in Doha, but she is expected to be back in action at next week's Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.
