Serena falls flat to Konta in San Jose opener

It was an anticipated first round clash, featuring recent Wimbledon runner-up Serena Williams and British number one Johanna Konta in San Jose - but no one was expecting the scoreline at the end of their opening round match.

Konta played some of her best tennis of the season to dismiss Williams with the loss of just one game 6-1 6-0. The World No.48 was by far the fresher of the two, reeling off twelve straight games from 0-1 down, to score a dominant victory over the American in just 53-minutes.

It was the first match since Wimbledon for both women, where home favourite Konta crashed out to Cibulkova in the second round and Serena fell to Kerber in the final.

"It's an absolute privilege for me to be on the same court as her," Konta said in her post-match interview.

"She obviously was not playing her best level, nowhere near it, I really just tried to play the match on my terms, and put away the incredible champion she is and just play the player on the day..."

For Serena, the loss meant the first time in her illustrious professional career (spanning over 23 years) that she had failed to win at least two games in a match. "I'm taking everything a day at a time," the 23-time major champion told reporters after the loss. "I think she played better in this match than she did in about 18 months, so I think that's a good thing for her."

"I know I can play a zillion times better, so that kind of helps out too," the 36-year old said.

Konta becomes the first British woman to post a win against Serena Williams.

Williams is scheduled to play the Roger's Cup in Montreal next as part of her US Open series.
