Three-time Rogers Cup champion Williams announced her withdrawal from the WTA Premier 5 event in Montreal on Saturday, citing personal reasons via the tournament’s Twitter page.

Williams was set to face Alize Cornet in the opening round and was on course for a Wimbledon final rematch with Angelique Kerber in the Round of 32. She has been replaced in the draw by German and fellow mother Tatjana Maria.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion returned to tennis in March this season at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells after a 14-month absence in which she married husband Alexis Ohanian and gave birth to her first child, daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr.

Facing life-threatening complications during birth, Serena’s comeback has exceeded expectations, with the legendary American making the second week of Roland Garros (where she had to withdraw with a pectoral injury) before a stunning run to the Wimbledon final, where she fell just short of becoming the first mother to win Wimbledon since Evonne Goolagong in 1980, going down to Kerber in straight sets.

Serena returned to action this week at the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic in San Jose, but she was well beaten in a crushing 6-1 6-0 defeat to Johanna Konta in the opening round.

The 36-year-old is still scheduled to play the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati (which begins on August 12) before embarking on an 18th U.S Open campaign.
