Elina Svitolina has earned praise for a selfless act of kindness after reportedly paying for the surgery of teenage countrywoman Daria Lopatetskaya.

Lopatetskaya is a rising 16-year-old prodigy from Ukraine who has climbed 250 spots in the WTA rankings this season to a current career-high of No. 231.

However, her progress is set to be temporarily stagnated after she seriously injured her knee at an ITF event in Rome. Lopatetskaya required immediate surgery, however - as is the case with a lot of youngsters coming through the ranks - she and her family couldn’t afford to pay for the procedure.

It’s since been revealed that Svitolina forked out the €12,000 to pay for Lopatetskaya’s knee surgery, which was successful in Rome this week.

Lopatetskaya’s sister, Maria, told a local publication how the surgery was a success and extended gratitude towards Svitolina for her help.

“Good evening. Recently, Daria’s operation has ended. Everything went well. We want to thank everyone who supported our family, and without a difference, this help was material or moral. We would also like to thank separately Elina Svitolina, who paid for the operation,” she said.
“Now Daria is in the clinic and for some time she will stay there. Rehabilitation requires a lot of effort for it and financial costs for us.”

Svitolina herself has been battling a knee injury this season, first experiencing the problem in February as she battled through pain to make the semi-finals in Dubai and Indian Wells, but eventually taking some time off the tour after a first round loss in Miami in order to rehabilitate.

The World No. 6 also withdrew from Stuttgart but has returned for Madrid and Rome (where she was a two-time defending champion), losing in the opening rounds of both to Pauline Parmentier and Victoria Azarenka respectively.

"It's not ideal to play in general, but I took this chance," Svitolina said in Madrid. "I really want to play those tournaments and I'll try and give it my best shot. It's important to listen to my body and if I cannot go any further than it happens and you have to take the time to recover and come back again and try again."
