Svitolina is competing in Guangzhou for the first time as she continues her search for a first title of the season. The Ukrainian is coming off a quarter final exit at last week's Zhengzhou Open, where she defeated Yulia Putintseva in her tournament opener before suffering a three-set loss to Kristina Mladenovic.

While Svitolina is yet to win a title this season, her year can hardly be described as a failure, as she has scored significant breakthroughs at the majors, reaching her first Grand Slam semi-finals at Wimbledon and the US Open.

She has also had to deal with a knee injury which bothered her for a good chunk of the first half of the year.

Fresh off rounding off the 2018 season with a superb title run at the WTA Finals in Singapore, Svitolina made a decent start to 2019, reaching the quarter finals at the Australian Open, and backing it up with consecutive semi-finals in Doha, Dubai and Indian Wells. However, she had picked up an injury during the Middle Eastern swing in February, and after carrying on through the pain barrier, the problem eventually caught up with her results about a month later.

The 25-year-old failed to cross the opening rounds in five of her next six tournaments after Indian Wells- Miami, Madrid, Rome, Birmingham and Eastbourne- with the only exception during that stretch being Roland Garros, where she reached the third round before falling to former champion, Garbine Muguruza.

Given her form and history at the tournament, not much was expected from Svitolina at Wimbledon, but almost out of nowhere, she produced her best major performance at the All England Club, reaching the semis before falling to eventual champion, Simona Halep. She repeated the trick at the US Open, advancing to the last four without dropping a set, before succumbing to Serena Williams.

With the Slams now out of the way, Svitolina will now target a strong, consistent end to the season, with the aim of claiming her first title, and also qualifying for the season-ending finals, where she is the reigning champion. Not since 2012 has Svitolina gone a full season without winning a tour-level title, and her latest bid to end her 2019 drought begins on Tuesday when she takes on Slovenia's Jakupovic.

Jakupovic lost to Italian, Jasmine Paolini in the qualifying rounds, but she enters the tournament via the lucky loser route, and will be looking to make the most of the opportunity when she starts her main draw campaign against the tournament's top seed.

It's been a difficult year for Jakupovic, who has won just four tour-level main draw matches all season. Her wins have come in Dubai, Monterrey, Jurmala and Nanchang, while she has failed to cross the first round in 11 of her 15 main draw tournaments in 2019.

Her struggles go beyond the main tour, as she suffered first round defeats at the WTA 125K meets in Bol, Karlsruhe and New Haven, and at the ITF W60 event in Hechingen. Her only other main draw victory outside those WTA wins was at the ITF W100 tournament in Trnava, where she defeated Kimberly Zimmermann in the opening round before crashing to Anna Bondar in the next round.

Jakupovic began the season inside the top 100, but she has since slipped to 151st on the rankings following her poor run of results. The 28-year-old had put together a career-best 2018, breaking into the top 100 for the first time, and peaking at No. 69 after a season where she reached tour-level semi-finals in Bogota, and quarter finals in Nottingham, Birmingham and Tashkent. She also won an ITF title in Canberra, and made the last four at the WTA 125K meet in Mumbai at the end of the year.

That form has completely deserted her this year, as the Slovenian has struggled to pick up wins at any level.

Jakupovic might have got into the main Guangzhou main draw as a lucky loser, but there's nothing lucky about her first round draw, as she takes on top seed, Svitolina for the first time on Tuesday.

The chances of an upset are very slim in this one.
