Venus is playing just her ninth tournament of the season, as she continues to manage the latter stages of her career. The legendary American gets another shot at winning a 50th career title this week, having been stuck at 49 since her most recent WTA triumph in Kaohsiung in February 2016.

Venus won this tournament in its old guise and venue in Stanford in 2000 and 2002, beating Lindsay Davenport and Kim Clijsters in the respective finals, while she has contested six other finals, the most recent in 2016, when she was beaten by Johanna Konta. She reached the quarter finals last year, as the tournament debuted in San Jose, beating Heather Watson before losing to eventual finalist, Maria Sakkari.

After a resurgent 2017, when she reached Grand Slam finals at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, a semi-final at the US Open, and returned to the top five in the rankings, Venus could not recreate that form in 2018, as the exertions from the previous season appeared to take a toll on her. She made one semi-final at Indian Wells, and a couple of quarter finals in Miami and San Jose, before ending her year after a third-round loss to sister, Serena at the US Open.

The seven-time Grand Slam champion was down at 39th at the end of the 2018 season, and is currently at 50th in the world after another shortened campaign. The 39-year-old is 14-8 in 2019, reaching quarter-finals at Indian Wells, Auckland and Birmingham, and the fourth round at the Miami Open in her best results of the year so far.

Can she reproduce some of her best form in San Jose and finally claim that milestone 50th title? She starts her bid against Mattek-Sands on Tuesday.

Mattek-Sands is playing her first singles tournament since the Australian Open, having struggled with a knee injury for most of the season.

The American infamously suffered a horrific knee injury at Wimbledon in 2017, and did not play again until the Miami Open in March 2018, but she went 1-8 through the rest of the year, dropping to a year-end mark of 350th in the process. She did have some success in the doubles, as she partnered Jamie Murray to win the US Open mixed doubles title.

Mattek-Sands has played just two singles matches in 2019, losing both in Auckland and the Australian Open before enduring another spell on the sidelines due to more troubles with her knee. While the former world No. 30 has not played singles since January, she was back on the doubles court for the grass-court season, featuring in Eastbourne and Wimbledon.

Her singles ranking has understandably plummeted to 674th, as she has won just one match in over two years. Can she pick up a rare win when she squares off against Venus Williams on Tuesday?

Venus has won all four previous matches between the pair, dropping just one set in the process, and considering Mattek-Sands prolonged inactivity, the seven-time major winner looks set to move into the second round in San Jose on Tuesday.
