Rising stars, Sofia Kenin, Dayana Yastremska and Karolina Muchova join the all-star cast, making this one of the strongest fields ever assembled in the competition.

Former world No. 1 and seven-time major winner Venus Williams will play at the Brisbane International for the first time in her career, having been handed a wildcard into the tournament.

“After so many years on the tour, it is good to play at new tournaments and experience a different city. Brisbane International is always spoken of so highly among the WTA players and so I wanted to see it for myself,” Williams said.

Since its inception in 2009, the Brisbane International has always attracted high quality fields, boasting great champions like Serena Williams, Victoria Azarenka, Kim Clijsters, Maria Sharapova, Kvitova, Svitolina and Pliskova. Two-time champions, Serena, Azarenka and Pliskova are the only players to have won the title on multiple occasions.

Barty will hope to become the first Australian woman to win the tournament when she opens her 2020 campaign in front of her home fans. The world No. 1 will be competing in Brisbane main draw for the third straight season, and will be keen to improve on a 1-2 record at the event. The 23-year-old fell to Lesia Tsurenko in the opening round last year. She faces stiff competition from the likes of Pliskova, who has won the tournament in two of the last three seasons, while Kvitova and Svitolina will nurse genuine hopes of adding to their previous successes at the venue.

The 2020 Brisbane International is live from Brisbane from 6-12 January.
