36-year old Federer avoided a big upset in his opening round match against American teenager Frances Tiafoe, eventually prevailing in five-sets 4-6 6-2 6-1 1-6 6-4.

On a rainy Day 2 at the US Open, Federer was scheduled to close out proceeding under the Arthur Ashe stadium roof, despite rain halting matches on the outer courts. The 3rd seed was playing at Flushing Meadows for the first time since 2015 after an extended injury-break caused him to miss the event last year.

The Swiss admitted to 'being cautious about his movement' which attributed to his slow start to the contest.

“I really struggled early on,” Federer said. “I think Frances connected well. I just really kind of lost my footing sometimes. My eye wasn't working. I was misjudging distance. I think I was also being a bit cautious with my movement.”

The confident 19-year old took full advantage to break Federer early in the first set and hold on before closing it out 6-4 - the first set Federer lost at a Slam since the Australian Open final in January. Federer then began to find his rhythm, taking the next two sets comfortably before dropping the fourth and forcing a decider.

After being broken while serving for the match, the 5-time champion regrouped to capitalise on a loose tenth game from Tiafoe and prevail 4-6 6-2 6-1 1-6 6-4. Despite the close loss, Tiafoe takes a lot of encouragement from the match and earned praise from the Swiss great after their well-fought battle.

“Great year so. You're only getting better and better. Keep going, you're going to have one hell of a future,” Tiafoe said the Swiss great told him.

The American had always dreamed of playing on the biggest stage, now he can hold his head up high after electrifying the Arthur Ashe crowd with a fine performance.

“Every day I thought I would be here. I always told my dad that. Finally, I had the opportunity to do it. It means the world to me. I'm happy that my brother, my mum, my dad, everyone got to see it.”

Federer will face either Slovenia's Blaz Kavcic or veteran Mikhail Youzhny on Thursday.
