Beginning Monday 18 January, the first Grand Slam of the year is played at Melbourne Park in the thriving and vibrant city of Melbourne.

World no. 1 Novak Djokovic, who has won the Australian Open five of the past six years, will lead the field in 2016 as the defending champion attempts to retain the title he won by defeating four-time runner-up Andy Murray in a thrilling final in 2015. Djokovic, who currently holds the Wimbledon and US Open titles in addition to the 'Happy Slam' trophy, is joined by fellow former champions Roger Federer (who won the Australian Open four times between 2006 and 2010), Rafael Nadal and Stan Wawrinka, as well as Murray, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Australian bad boy Nick Kyrgios.

On the women's side, Serena William will begin her quest for a 22nd Grand Slam title, which would tie Steffi Graf's Open Era record, anew in Melbourne as the defending champion, having reclaimed the title she last won in 2010 when she defeated Maria Sharapova in a hard-fought 2015 final. Serena is joined by fellow Australian Open champions Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka, while Simona Halep and Garbine Muguruza represent the rising stars of the women's game hoping to take a first Grand Slam title in Melbourne.

The top 128 men and 128 women of the ATP World Tour and WTA Tour battle for one of the biggest prizes in sport over two weeks in the heat of the Australian summer as the Grand Slam of Asia-Pacific begins its 2016 edition on Monday 18 January.
