Magnificent Daniil Medvedev claims US Open crown to deny Djokovic Calendar Grand Slam

Daniil Medvedev captured the first major title of his career while denying Novak Djokovic the Calendar Grand Slam following a straight-sets victory in the US Open final.

The inspired second seed became only the fourth Russian to triumph at Flushing Meadows – after Marat Safin, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Maria Sharapova – following his 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 success.

Meanwhile, an uncharacteristically lacklustre Djokovic missed out on the opportunity to become only the second male of the Open Era – after Rod Laver in 1969 – to win all four Slams in the same calendar year.

The world number one also remains locked on 20 major titles after seeing the chance to leapfrog Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal go begging.

Runner-up to Nadal here in 2019, Medvedev had dropped just a single set on the way to reaching his second final on Ashe.

The second seed capitalised on a nervy start by three-time champion Djokovic, who surrendered a 40-15 lead in the opening game before a couple of unforced errors cost him an early break of serve.

It was a crucial one too as the first set went with serve, with Medvedev holding to love in game 10 to edge his nose in front.

Losing the opening set for the fifth match running, Djokovic was clearly struggling and his frustration boiled over midway through the second; the world number one smashing his racket and receiving a warning from the umpire.

His opponent broke in the fifth game on the way to opening up a two-set advantage on Ashe.

Djokovic recovered from losing the first two sets to defeat Stefanos Tsitsipas in the French Open final back in June.

But his hopes of repeating that feat were fading fast as Medvedev broke twice and hit his 14th ace of the contest to open a commanding 4-0 advantage in the third.

The world number two set up Championship point in game eight but, incredibly, hit successive double-faults as Djokovic somehow managed to cling onto faint aspirations of emulating Laver 52 years earlier.

However, Medvedev made no mistake in his next service game and that maiden Slam was secured when the top seed sent a desperate backhand slice into the tape.

Emma Raducanu became the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam in the Open Era after defeating Leylah Fernandez in straight sets to claim the 2021 US Open crown.

The 18-year-old completed the most remarkable of victories by seeing off fellow teenage sensation Fernandez 6-4, 6-3 at Flushing Meadows.

The first British female Slam champion since Virginia Wade at Wimbledon in 1977, Raducanu also became the youngest major winner since Maria Sharapova’s All England Club triumph in 2004.

Having only completed her A-levels a couple of months ago, the world number 150 will climb a whopping 127 places to 23rd in Monday’s updated WTA rankings.

Raducanu’s sensational triumph was also achieved without dropping a single set; making her the first player to do this at the US Open since Serena Williams seven years ago.

This was the first time in 22 years that two teenagers had contested the Ladies’ singles final at Flushing Meadows.

Raducanu had come through three qualifying rounds, before defeating Olympic gold medalist Belinda Bencic and 17th seed Maria Sakkari in the quarter and semi-finals respectively.

Meanwhile, world number 73 Fernandez was looking to become only the second Slam champion from Canada after Bianca Andreescu’s triumph here two years ago.

The 19-year-old enjoyed a brilliant run to the final; defeating former champions Naomi Osaka and Angelique Kerber, as well as fifth and second seeds Elina Svitolina and Aryna Sabalenka.

A tight opening set saw Fernandez immediately cancel out Raducanu’s break in the second game, before going with serve until the 10th.

It was here that the new British number one fashioned four set points on her opponent’s serve; drawing first blood at the fourth attempt with a blistering forehand.

Seeking to become the first woman to win a Slam in only her second main-draw appearance, Raducanu responded brilliantly to being broken in the third game of the second set.

Another thumping forehand winner then saw her crucially break in game six, before powering through her own service game to stand on the brink of victory at 5-2.

Fernandez dug deep; fending off two Championship points before Raducanu served for the chance to become only the fourth British female Slam winner after Wade, Ann Jones and Sue Barker.

The 18-year-old was forced to take a medical timeout at 30-40 behind after sustaining a nasty cut to her knee while attempting to return a powerful Fernandez forehand, much to the dismay of her opponent.

Nevertheless, she quickly regained her composure to rescue that break point, before a stunning ace secured the perfect ending to what has been a fairy-tale run in New York.

Raducanu becomes the third British player to triumph in the Big Apple during the Open Era; after Wade in 1968 and Andy Murray 44 years later.

Novak Djokovic will be seeking revenge when he takes on Alexander Zverev in the second Semi-Final of the 2021 US Open.

Djokovic has lost just two of his last 29 matches, and one of these defeats was against Zverev in the Semi-Finals of the recent Tokyo Olympics.

The Serbian star will be looking for revenge for sure, but his performance here in Flushing Meadows this year has been slightly indifferent. Nole has dropped the opening set in four of his five matches at the US Open 2021, including in the quarterfinals against Matteo Berrettini.

Djokovic is now just two victories away from completing a historic Calendar Grand Slam. In addition, if he will win the US Open, then Nole will overtake both Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer in the Grand Slam race for the first time in his career.

Meanwhile, Zverev has won 19 of his last 20 matches and he is currently on a 16-match winning streak on hard courts. During this run, the German won the Gold medal at the Olympics and lift the title in Cincinnati.

Here at the 2021 US Open, Alexander has defeated the likes of Querrey, Ramos, Sock, Sinner, and Harris while dropping just one set in the process.

We expect a close contest, so our prediction is Over 3.5 Sets at odds of 6/10 with Bet365.

Djokovic v Zverev is available to watch via a live stream on desktop, mobile or tablet devices from approximately 12am BST.

Felix Auger-Aliassime and Daniil Medvedev will square off in the opening Semi-Final of the 2021 US Open on Friday.

Auger-Aliassime had a one-set lead and 3-1  in the second set against Carlos Alcaraz in the Quarter-Finals, but the Spaniard was forced to retire due to an injury. This means that Felix became the first-ever Canadian to reach the Semi-Finals of the US Open.

Auger-Aliassime is the youngest US Open semifinalist since Juan Martin Del Potro’s amazing run to the title back in 2009. A victory tonight for Felix will see him climb as high as ninth in the ATP Rankings.

Meanwhile, Medvedev’s 14-set winning streak in this US Open ended in the Quarter-Finals as he dropped a set against Botic Van De Zandschulp. Prior to the US Open, Medvedev did well to lift the title in Toronto and to reach the Semi-Finals in Cincinnati.

This is the third time when the Russian has reached the Semi-Finals of the US Open in as many appearances.

It should be an intense match with the Canadian trying to break Medvedev’s excellent defence. Our prediction is Under 38.5 Games at odds of 62/100 with Bet365.

Auger-Aliassime v Medvedev is available to watch via a live stream on desktop, mobile or tablet devices from approximately 8pm BST.

Emma Raducanu aims to continue her fairy-tale campaign at the 2021 US Open when she takes on Belinda Bencic in the Quarter-Finals on Wednesday.

Raducanu put in another impressive display to defeat Shelby Rogers in the Round of 16. The Brit is just the third qualifier to reach the US Open Quarter-Finals in the Open Era. She has won 13 of her last 15 matches on hard courts and is yet to drop a set in Flushing Meadows after seven matches.

Furthermore, she is 5-0 in her career against top 50 players and she has already taken out three players at this level this week.

Bencic has been at her best over the past few months. The Swiss has won the Gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics and she also reached the Quarter-Finals in Cincinnati prior to the US Open.

She is in the US Open Quarter-Finals for the third time in her career, having reached the semis back in 2019 and the Last Eight in 2014 at the age of just 17.

Similar to Raducanu, Bencic hasn’t lost a single set in New York so far and comes fresh off a tough victory over Iga Swiatek.

We expect Raducanu to continue her tremendous campaign and to win today at odds of 11/10 with Bet365.

Raducanu v Bencic is available to watch via a live stream on desktop, mobile or tablet devices from approximately 5pm BST.

World number one Novak Djokovic will face familiar foe Matteo Berrettini in the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 US Open.

Djokovic is on a quest to win a record-breaking 21st Major title and to complete the Calendar Year Grand Slam. Nole hasn’t reached the Semi-Finals at Flushing Meadows since 2018, but he is on a 25-match winning streak at the Majors.

Djokovic’s run at the 2021 US Open hasn’t been perfect, as he has dropped at least one set in three of his four matches. This happened in his most recent match too, when he dropped his serve twice in the first set against Brooksby.

Meanwhile, Berrettini opened up his 2021 US Open campaign with a straight-set victory over Chardy, but that was his only win to nil.

Since then, the Italian has dropped sets in each of the previous three rounds against mediocre opponents in the shape of Moutet, Ivashka and Otte.

Berrettini’s highlights of the season include a title run at Queen’s Club and a Grand Slam final appearance at Wimbledon, where he lost to Djokovic. This will be Matteo’s second career Quarter-Final appearance at the US Open.

Our prediction for this clash is Over 32.5 Games at odds of 7/10 with Bet365.

Djokovic v Berrettini is available to watch via a live stream on desktop, mobile or tablet devices from approximately 1.30am BST.

Karolina Pliskova and Maria Sakkari will go toe-to-toe in the quarterfinals of the 2021 US Open on Wednesday night.

For the first time in three years, Karolina Pliskova is back in the US Open Quarter-Finals. She has reached this stage in this event back in 2017 and 2018, while she was a runner-up to Angelique Kerber back in 2016.

The Czech has defeated the likes of McNally, Anisimova, Tomljanovic, and Pavlyuchenkova en route to the last eight and has dropped just one set in the process. Karolina has been a semifinalist or finalist in each of the four Grand Slam events but is yet to win a major title.

Sakkari survived an epic three-hour and 30-minute marathon Round of 16 match against 2019 US Open champion, Bianca Andreescu. This was the toughest test for the Greek at the US Open 2021 so far, as she previously won in straight sets against Kostyuk, Siniakova, and Kvitova.

Sakkari hasn’t been at her best over the past few months, but it seems she has finally found form here in Flushing Meadows.

We expect a close contest here with Over 21.5 Games at odds of 8/11 with Bet365.

Pliskova v Sakkari is available to watch via a live stream on desktop, mobile or tablet devices from approximately 12am BST.

In-form Alexander Zverev will take on Lloyd George Harris in the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 US Open on Wednesday.

Zverev has registered his 15th consecutive victory on hard courts after beating Jannik Sinner in straight sets in the Round of 16 of the 2021 US Open. Three out of his four matches in Flushing Meadows have been in straight sets, with the only exception being the match against Sock in the third round.

Zverev, who won the Gold medal at the Olympics and lift the title in Cincinnati, last lost in the 4th round of Wimbledon against Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Meanwhile, Harris has enjoyed great success in New York this year, defeating three seeded players en route to the last eight. He had to play a five-set thriller against Khachanov in the opening round, but then raced past Escobedo and Shapovalov before defeating fellow American Opelka two days ago.

Harris has won just two matches at a Grand Slam prior to the US Open and was a finalist in Dubai this year.

We expect another 3-0 victory over Alexander Zverev today, which is priced at odds of 9/10 with Bet365.

Zverev v Harris is available to watch via a live stream on desktop, mobile or tablet devices from approximately 6.30pm BST.

Daniil Medvedev will be looking for another straight-set victory when he faces Botic Van De Zandschulp in the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 US Open.

Van De Zandschulp is a relatively unknown presence of the ATP tour, but he has already won seven matches here at the US Open 2021 coming through qualifiers.

The Dutchman has beaten several clay specialists in his main draw matches. He already played two five-set thrillers last week against Taberner in the opening round and Diego Schwartzman in the Fourth Round.

Medvedev, meanwhile, has won 13 of his last 15 matches on hard courts. The Russian claimed the title at the National Bank Open in Toronto three weeks ago and reached the Semi-Finals of the Cincinnati Masters a fortnight ago.

Medvedev is yet to drop a set at this year’s US Open, having beaten Richard Gasquet, Dominik Koepfer, Pablo Andujar, and Dan Evans in straight sets. His serving numbers have been solid and he has always been a threat on quicker surfaces like this one in New York.

Our prediction for this clash is Under 28.5 Games at odds of 4/6 with Bet365.

Elina Svitolina will take on surprise package Leylah Fernandez on Tuesday in the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 US Open.

Svitolina extended her winning streak to nine matches thanks to a dominant 2-0 victory over Simona Halep. During this run, Elina did well to lift the trophy in Chicago following a 2-0 win in the final against Cornet.

The Ukrainian is yet to lose a set at the 2021 US Open after defeating the likes of Marino, Masarova, Kastkina, and Halep. Elina is 2-5 in Grand Slam quarter-final matches.

It has been an amazing tournament for Leylah Annie Fernandez who has recently turned just 19 years old. The teenager managed straight-set victories in the first rounds against Konjuh and Kanepi.

Then, she followed it up with three-set wins over multiple major winners Naomi Osaka and Angelique Kerber. This is the furthest Fernandez has been at the US Open, or any Grand Slam.

Svitolina looks unstoppable at the moment, so we fancy her to win 2-0 at odds of 1/1 with Bet365.

Svitolina v Fernandez is available to watch via a live stream on desktop, mobile or tablet devices from approximately 5pm BST.
