Resilient Rafael Nadal edges Fritz thriller to reach Wimbledon semi-finals

Rafael Nadal rallied through to the Wimbledon semi-finals after beating Taylor Fritz in a nail-biting fifth-set tie-break on Wednesday.

The 22-time Grand Slam champion maintained his perfect quarter-final record at SW19; making it eight wins from eight as he prevailed 3-6 7-5 3-6 7-5 7-6(4) in an epic encounter that lasted four hours and 21 minutes.

But it proved a constant struggle on Centre Court for the Spaniard, who appeared on the brink of defaulting on numerous occasions.

Nadal has captured the Australian Open and French Open crowns this season despite an ongoing foot injury, while a rib issue threatened his hopes of completing a Calendar Slam in 2022.

He appeared to be struggling early on as first-time Slam quarter-finalist Fritz reeled off five successive games from 3-1 down in the opening set – including 11 of the last 12 points from deuce at 3-3 – to draw first blood.

The Eastbourne champion was appearing in the last eight having not dropped a single set; becoming the first American to do so at Wimbledon since Andy Roddick in 2007.

But that streak ended as Nadal replied. Although, the Spaniard looked uncomfortable and called for a medical timeout upon the conclusion of the second.

Fritz, who prevailed when they previously met in the Indian Wells showpiece in March, capitalised to take the third set 6-3 and move to the brink of ending his opponent’s 18-match winning streak in Grand Slam events this year.

Nevertheless, the two-time Wimbledon winner dug deep to force a deciding set and subsequent tie-break.

And despite having recorded just five aces to his opponent’s 19 while looking increasingly uncomfortable as the contest wore on, he somehow dominated the tie-break 10-4 to seal a remarkable victory.

His reward is a showdown with Nick Kyrgios, who will appear in his maiden career Slam semi-final after beating Cristian Garin in straight sets.

Garin had recovered from two sets down to defeat Kyrgios’ compatriot Alex De Minaur in the previous round and become the first Chilean to reach the quarter-finals of a Slam since Francisco Gonzalez at the 2009 US Open.

But he was outclassed on this occasion by the world number 40, who became the lowest-ranked player to reach the Wimbledon last four since 2008 – and first male from Australia to do so since Lleyton Hewitt three years earlier.

Over in the Ladies’ draw, Simona Halep continued her dominant run with a commanding 6-2 6-4 win over Amanda Anisimova.

The 2019 champion recorded her 12th straight victory at the All England Club – the longest streak since Serena Williams’ run of 20 between 2015 and 2018 – and she is yet to drop a set this year.

Standing in her way of a place in the final is Elena Rybakina after the 17th seed came from behind to beat Ajla Tomljanovic 4-6 6-2 6-3.

The Kazakhstani ace registered her eighth win in nine matches at SW19 as she became the first player from her nation – male or female – to reach the last four of a Slam.

Wimbledon 2022 Day 10 Results

Wednesday July 6

Quarter-Finals

Centre Court
Simona Halep 6-2 6-4 Amanda Anisimova
Taylor Fritz 6-3 5-7 6-3 5-7 6-7(4) Rafael Nadal

No.1 Court
Ajla Tomljanovic 6-4 2-6 3-6 Elena Rybakina
Cristian Garín 4-6 3-6 6-7(5) Nick Kyrgios

Nick Kyrgios will face off against Cristian Garin in an unmissable Wimbledon Quarter-Final on Wednesday.

It seems that Garin loves Wimbledon’s grass as he managed to reach at least the Fourth Round here for the second year in a row. Last year, he was stopped by Novak Djokovic in the Last 16, but he came through a five-set thriller against Alex De Minaur earlier in the week to go one better.

Garin is now the first Chilean player to appear in the Quarter-Finals at Wimbledon since Fernando Gonzalez in 2005.

He has been struggling with fitness issues over the past year, and his win/loss record before the start of Wimbledon was reading 12 wins and 15 defeats.

Meanwhile, Kyrgios is having an amazing grass season to date. The Aussie has reached the Semi-Finals in Stuttgart and Halle before a precautionary withdrawal at Mallorca.

This fortnight at Wimbledon, Kyrgios has played some tough matches as he lost at least one set in three of his four matches. Actually, he actually needed two five-setters in order to reach this stage of the competition.

The interesting fact is that Kyrgios holds a solid record in five-setters, having won 11 of his previous 14 five-set matches.

Nick has never progressed beyond the quarterfinal in Grand Slams and this is probably his best opportunity to do it given the fact that Garin isn’t a grass specialist.

Our prediction for this clash is Over 33.5 Games at odds of 6/10 with Bet365.

Garin v Kyrgios is available to watch via a live stream on desktop, mobile or tablet devices from approximately 2.30pm BST.

Second seed Rafael Nadal will face in-form American Taylor Fritz in the Quarter-Finals of Wimbledon 2022 on Wednesday.

Fritz was the player that ended Nadal’s unbeaten start to the year as he beat the Spaniard at Indian Wells back in March.

Fritz has been in excellent shape on grass over the past three weeks and he enters this clash on the back of an eight-match winning streak on this surface.

The American has won the Eastbourne tournament prior to the start of Wimbledon and he is now in the Quarter-Finals of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career.

In addition, Fritz is yet to drop a single set at Wimbledon this fortnight after registering four straight-set victories over Lorenzo Musetti, Alastair Gray, Alex Molcan, and Jason Kubler.

Nadal had a slow start to this Wimbledon campaign as he dropped a set against both Franciso Cerundolo and Ricardas Berankis in the opening two rounds. However, he has improved his level in the next two rounds against Lorenzo Sonego and Botic Van De Zandschulp.

Rafa has won more Grand Slams than anyone else and this is the first time in his career when he has a good chance of completing the hallowed calendar Grand Slam.

The Spaniard holds a perfect record of seven victories and no defeats in the Quarter-Finals at Wimbledon and he has won all his 18 matches in slams this year.

We expect a tough contest, so our best bet is Over 3.5 Sets at odds of 6/10 with Bet365.

Fritz v Nadal is available to watch via a live stream on desktop, mobile or tablet devices from approximately 3pm BST.

Third seed Ons Jabeur will take on the unseeded Marie Bouzkova in the Quarter-Finals of Wimbledon 2022 on Tuesday.

The first main tour meeting between these two players will see them face off for the right to reach the Last Four of a Grand Slam for the first time.

Following the departure of French Open champion Iga Swiatek, Jabeur has been installed as the narrow new favourite to lift the Women’s Singles trophy this weekend.

The Tunisian is appearing in her third Grand Slam Quarter-Final following straight sets victories over Mirjam Bjorklund, Katarzyna Kawa, Diane Parry and Elise Mertens.

Jabeur has a solid win-loss record over the past decade, having won 64% of her matches (325-181), and is 9-0 on grass so far this year.

The 27-year-old, now ranked world number two, has picked  up the Madrid Open and German Open titles this year and was runner-up in the Charleston Open and Italian Open.

Bouzkova is through to her first major Quarter-Final following wins over Danielle Rose Collins, Ann Li, Alison Riske and Caroline Garcia.

The Czech star reached the final in Guadalajara earlier this year and has an overall 26-9 win-loss record in 2022.

After losing the first set to Collins in the opening round, Bouzkova has since reeled off eight sets without reply, but now faces a formidable test against the new title favourite.

Either Tatjana Maria or Jule Niemeier of Germany will await the winner in the Semi-Finals later in the week.

Bouzkova v Jabeur is available to watch via a live stream on desktop, mobile or tablet devices from approximately 3pm BST.

David Goffin and home favourite Cameron Norrie will square off in the Quarter-Finals of Wimbledon 2022 on Tuesday.

Goffin had two comfortable wins against Radu Albot and Sebastian Baez in the first two rounds at Wimbledon, but his adventure got tougher as the tournament progressed.

The Belgian needed a four-set comeback effort against Ugo Humbert in the Third Round before being taken to the distance by Frances Tiafoe in the round of 16.

Goffin has lost his previous three quarterfinal matches in Grand Slams. Actually, the most recent of those defeats came here at Wimbledon back in 2019 when he was smashed by Novak Djokovic in straight sets.

Overall, Goffin has played 38th Grand Slams in his career, but he has never reached the Semi-Finals in all these attempts.

Meanwhile, Norrie is yet to drop a set at Wimbledon this fortnight after beating the likes of Andujar-Alba, Munar, Johnson, and Paul.

The Brit has won four titles since the start of the 2021 season, including a Masters title at Indian Wells.

Norrie is the first player from the UK other than Andy Murray to reach this stage at Wimbledon since Tim Henman did the same back in 2004.

The only worrying thing for Norrie is that his record in the quarterfinals is still negative, having won just three of his seven matches at this stage.

Our prediction for this match is Over 37.5 Games at odds of 3/4 with Bet365.

Goffin v Norrie is available to watch via a live stream on desktop, mobile or tablet devices from approximately 2.30pm BST.

Top seed Novak Djokovic will take on 10th seed Jannik Sinner in the Quarter-Finals of Wimbledon 2022 on Tuesday.

Djokovic has had an indifferent season to say at least; he was unable to participate in the Australian Open for medical reasons, but he still managed to win 21 out of 27 matches since then. His stand-out performance during this run was a title-winning campaign at the Rome Masters.

The 35-year-old has dropped two sets in four matches at Wimbledon so far this fortnight, including one against Tim van Rijthoven in the previous round.

Djokovic is a six-time champion at Wimbledon and managed to defend his title on three occasions. In addition, the Serb is currently on a 25-match winning run in the tournament and he will be making his 13th appearance in the Quarter-Finals.

Sinner, meanwhile, has dropped a set in three of his four matches en route to this stage. He comes into this clash on the back of a solid victory over rising star Carlos Alcaraz, which was his first in three attempts.

The only negative thing for Sinner is that he has played five quarterfinal matches this year and has failed to win any of them.

However, anything is possible for Sinner, especially since he entered Wimbledon this year without a single win on grass.

In conclusion, our best bet for this match is Novak Djokovic to win 3-0 at odds of 1/1 with Bet365.

Djokovic v Sinner is available to watch via a live stream on desktop, mobile or tablet devices from approximately 1.30pm BST.

Rafael Nadal will continue his quest for a 23rd Grand Slam when he takes on Botic Van De Zandschulp in the round of 16 of Wimbledon on Monday.

Nadal dropped a set in each of his first two matches at Wimbledon 2022 but finally registered a dominating victory in the following round. The Spaniard demolished Lorenzo Sonego in under two hours, dropping just seven games in the process.

Rafa has won his last 15 matches in the round of 16 of Grand Slams. Nadal has won four titles so far this season, including the Australian Open and the French Open.

Nadal has won Wimbledon on two occasions and now he is just one match away from reaching his eighth Quarter-Final at SW19.

The 36-year-old has claimed back-to-back major titles for the first time since 2010 and now has the opportunity to challenge for a first seasonal Grand Slam.

Van De Zandschulp is in the midst of a solid season, which culminated recently with a final in Munich on clay and semi-finals at Queen’s Club on grass.

He has won six of his nine matches on grass recently, including three victories at Wimbledon last week over Feliciano Lopez, Emil Ruusuvuori and Richard Gasquet.

The Dutch talent has been stopped only by top-5 players in the previous three Grand Slams, including a recent loss against Rafael Nadal at the French Open.

We expect Rafa to be served up a tough test here, so our prediction is Over 3.5 Sets at odds of 1/1 with Bet365.

Nadal v Van De Zandschulp is available to watch via a live stream on desktop, mobile or tablet devices from approximately 5pm BST.

Cameron Norrie is challenging for a maiden Grand Slam title at Wimbledon – here are full details of his next match.

Norrie has emerged as Britain’s best hope of success at Wimbledon this year with a string of great performances leaving him within touching distance of a place in the final.

Norrie entered the tournament as seed number nine and has certainly lived up to the billing so far, winning three of his matches in straight sets.

His First Round victory over Pablo Andujar-Alba was almost academic but he had to work harder against Jaume Munar- who pushed him all the way in a five set thriller.

His reward for that win was a third round match against America’s Steve Johnson, a match he won with ease, dropping just five games in a straight set victory.

Norrie’s Fourth Round tie with Tommy Paul saw the Brit really show his class, resisting Paul’s attempts to turn the match around to come away with a 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 win.

The home favourite then twice recovered from a set behind to edge out Belgium’s David Goffin in an epic decider on Tuesday to move into his first Grand Slam Semi-Final.

The 26-year-old is now gearing up for the biggest match of his career to date against defending champion and top seed Novak Djokovic – who is now 26 matches unbeaten at SW19.

Norrie’s Semi-Final match will take place on Friday July 8 from 1.30pm BST and will be available watch live online via the link below.

Fourth seed Paula Badosa will take on former champion Simona Halep in the Round of 16 at Wimbledon on Monday.

Badosa is not generally known as a top-class grass-court player, but she looked solid in the opening three rounds at Wimbledon last week. The Spaniard has beaten the likes of Chirico, Bara and Kvitova without dropping a single set in the process.

Badosa’s record in the Grand Slam round of 16 matches is pretty poor, having won just once in four matches at this stage.

Her only appearance in a major quarterfinal was at the 2021 French Open. She has had a strong start to this season with a title in Sydney, Semi-Finals at Indian Wells, and quarterfinals in Miami and Charleston.

Halep is the last Wimbledon former champion left in the competition and she looked pretty sharp in the opening three rounds.

She has defeated the likes of Muchova, Flipkens, and Frech while dropping just 19 games in the process.

The Romanian is currently 18-2 on grass since the start of the 2019 grass season, including winning Wimbledon that year.

Our prediction for this match is Over 20.5 Games at odds of 4/6 with Bet365.

Brandon Nakashima and Nick Kyrgios will square off in the Round of 16 of Wimbledon 2022 on Centre Court on Monday.

Nakashima seems to be enjoying the grass season so far as he registered 10 victories in his 13 matches on this surface. Brandon made the quarterfinals in Surbiton and Hertogenbosch before reaching the round of 16 in Eastbourne a fortnight ago.

The American has dropped just two sets in his three matches at Wimbledon so far after beating the likes of Kuhn, Shapovalov, and Galan Riveros.

Nakashima served very well in the previous round against Galan Riveros, but he is now facing a top-class grass-court player in the shape of Nick Kyrgios.

Meanwhile, Kyrgios was able to defeat Stefanos Tsitsipas in four sets in the previous round despite losing the opening set. It was a controversial match with both players accusing each other’s behaviour on the court.

Kyrgios has dropped three sets in his first three rounds at Wimbledon this week, although two of these were against Jubb in the opening match.

Overall, the enigmatic Australian is having an excellent season with 21 victories out of 29 matches.

We fancy Kyrgios to continue his Wimbledon adventure, so we back the Asian Handicap -4.5 Games at odds of 8/11 with Bet365.

Nakashima v Kyrgios is available to watch via a live stream on desktop, mobile or tablet devices from approximately 1.30 pm BST.
