The grass court season isn’t quite over yet as the Hall of Fame Open takes place in Newport over the next week.
The venue at Newport is held at the former home of the US National Championships. Interestingly, it is an event that has seen a lot of tennis success for US players over the years.
Nine of the last 13 Hall of Fame Opens have been won by home players. Most of the players have never really hit the heights in their careers either, but all possess a big serve. Rajeev Ram, Mardy Fish, John Isner, Steve Johnson, and Maxime Cressy are the home victors in the list.
When these men are supplemented with the other champions such as Kevin Anderson, Ivo Karlovic, Nicolas Mahut, and even three-time champion Greg Rusedski, you get a good feel about the type of player that has done well here in the past.
However, just to show the other side, Lleyton Hewitt and Fabrice Santoro have also won here, both of whom were excellent on grass though.
ATP Newport Betting Tips
Jordan Thompson 1pt @ 7/1 with Bet365
Thompson has been in a very decent run of form recently. He lost in the second round of Wimbledon to Novak Djokovic but made it to the final of s-Hertogenbosch when put up by this very column at a big price. He very nearly won the title but lost a second set tiebreak to deny the Aussie that honour.
No big prices this week but Thompson’s draw looks enticing and he probably has the pick of the form in the field. He was also a semifinalist in 2021 so he has some course form as well.
Mackenzie McDonald 1pt @ 10/1 with Bet365
You kind of have to pick an American player for this tournament given the home success in the past. McDonald has never played here before but comes off some decent results in the European grass court swing, including a semifinal at Eastbourne just before Wimbledon.
As the fourth seed, McDonald doesn’t have to play the first round, but yet he is chalked a bigger price than a few others that do have that extra match and his game suits the grass enough to be considered as an ATP Newport betting tip.
ATP Newport Draw
The draw at Newport is a 28-player draw, with 8 seeds. The top four seeds receive a bye into the second round.
