Richard Gasquet had to play in the qualification stages to book his spot in the main draw of the Cincinnati Masters 2021. The Frenchman had two comfortable matches though, against Fernando Verdasco and Jaume Munar, dropping just one set in the process. Prior to this tournament, Gasquet finished as runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz at the Umag Open in Croatia. Gasquet’s most notable result on hard courts over the past three years was a semifinal appearance in Sofia last year.
Meanwhile, Andy Murray has been up and down since his return on the tennis courts. This year, he finished as runner-up to Marchenko in the Biella Challenger, but then suffered a couple of early exits in Montpellier, Rotterdam, and Queen’s Championship Club. At Wimbledon, Andy has been eliminated in the third round in straight sets by Denis Shapovalov.
