Andrey Rublev started the year emphatically, having reached eight consecutive quarterfinals or better results on the main tour in the first four months. However, his form hasn’t been the same recently, as he failed to reach that stage in his most recent three tournaments (Wimbledon, Tokyo Olympics and Toronto Open). Rublev has won 21 matches on hard courts this year while losing just six in the process. He managed to lift titles in the ATP Cup and Rotterdam while reaching the semifinals in Miami, Dubai, Doha, and quarterfinals at the Australian Open.
On the flip side, Marin Cilic has won six and lost four of her last ten matches on grass and hard courts. The Croat has suffered second-round exits in his most recent two tournaments at the Tokyo Olympics and National Bank Open 2021 in Toronto. However, he bounced back with an impressive victory here at Cincinnati Masters as he defeated Aslan Karatsev in straight sets. Cilic hasn’t enjoyed such a great year so far, managing to link consecutive wins just once in six outdoor hard court events.
