Stan Wawrinka and Andy Murray will renew their rivalry in the opening round of the 2022 Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati on Monday.

The pair have previously met in seven Grand Slams and two tour finals, and despite nearing the end of their respective careers, remain formidable competitors on court.

Former world number one Murray has made immense strides after career-threatening hip surgery a few years ago, returning to the world’s top 50 courtesy of a series of strong runs in recent months.

Murray has progressed to two finals this year, most recently on his beloved grass surface in Stuttgart, narrowly losing out to Matteo Berrettini.

Murray was beaten in the opening round in Washington a fortnight ago before losing out to in-form Taylor Fritz at the same stage of last week’s Canadian Open.

Wawrinka, 37, comes into the contest on the back of a four-match losing streak since defeating Frances Tiafoe at Queen’s Club in June.

His defeat to Emil Ruusuvuori in Montreal last week marked his first hard court outing since March 2021, and he will be hoping to get the better of his old rival here.

Murray is a two-time Cincinnati Masters champion and last reached the final here in 2016. The Scot has won 12 of his 21 previous meetings with Wawrinka.

Wawrinka, however, prevailed in their most recent encounter in Round One of the 2020 French Open.

Either Danish teenager Holger Rune or British number one Cameron Norrie will await the winner in the Second Round.
