Andy Murray will take on Christopher O’Connell in the opening round of the 2022 Dubai Tennis Championships on Monday.
Murray looked solid in the opening round in Doha a week ago, but then suffered a humiliating 6-0, 6-1 defeat at the hands of Roberto Bautista-Agut. This was the most severe loss he recorded since 2015 when he faced Djokovic at the Miami Open.
The Brit had a solid start to the season, finishing as runner-up to Karatsev in Sydney. However, he has struggled for consistency since then with three defeats in his last six matches on hard courts. Actually, Murray was knocked out in the second round in each of the most recent three tournaments he competed in.
O’Connell, meanwhile, has lost only four of his 12 matches on hard courts in 2022. He is in decent shape at the moment, but in three of the four tournaments he has played this season, he was knocked out in the opening round. However, the Aussie did well to reach the 3rd round at the Australian Open where he lost in four sets against Cressy.
Here in Dubai, O’Connell did well to win two qualifying games so far, having beaten the likes of Laaksonen and Bhambri without dropping a set.
