Marco Cecchinato and Denis Shapovalov will square off in the second round of the 2021 Geneva Open On Wednesday at 17.00 pm (UK Time).
Marco Cecchinato has struggled for consistency throughout this clay season, but he has now managed to secure three victories in a row for the first time this season. He came as a qualifier here in Geneva and did well to beat Marchenko and Altmaier to book his place in the main draw. Furthermore, he had a 6-3, 3-0 lead against Stefano Travaglia in the opening round when Travaglia accused an injury and withdrew. Marco’s best performance over the past year was reaching the final in Sardinia last October when he lost in straight sets against Laslo Djere.
Denis Shapovalov has only played eight matches on clay this season while losing four in the process. After a couple of early exits in Barcelona, Estoril and Madrid, Denis Shapovalov looked a bit better in Rome last week. He won the opening two rounds in a comfortable manner against Majchrzak and Travaglia and was very close to secure an impressive win over Nadal in the third round. He looked great for the majority of the match, led 6-3 3-0 at one point, but couldn’t hold his nerves and Rafa fought back to win the clash.
