Alexander Zverev does battle with Denis Shapovalov for a place in the Halle Open quarter-finals on Wednesday.

One of the more eye-catching second-round ties at the grass-court ATP 500 event sees a showdown between the players ranked 22nd and 27th in the world respectively.

Zverev is making his first appearance on surface for two years, having missed the entire 2022 grass-court season after sustaining that horrific ankle injury in his French Open semi-final clash with Rafael Nadal.

The home favourite, who was a runner-up at this event in 2016 and 2017, marked his return with a straight-sets victory over former US Open champion Dominic Thiem in the opening round.

A semi-finalist at Roland Garros, Dubai and Geneva this season, Zverev will be hoping for another deep run here in preparation for Wimbledon, where he shall look to progress beyond the fourth round for the first time.

The ninth seed edges his head-to-head record with Shapovalov 4-3, though the latter has prevailed in three of their last four encounters – most recently in straight sets at this stage of the 2022 Australian Open.

The Canadian has fond memories of Wimbledon, reaching the semi-finals in 2021, though his preparations for this year’s venture to SW19 began with a first-round defeat to Marton Fucsovics in Stuttgart.

However, Shapovalov averted a repeat of that here by denying Lloyd Harris in straight sets in the first round. Another victory over Zverev would see him equal his best performance of the season, having also reached the last eight in Adelaide at the start of the year.

The winner of this match will play either Stefanos Tsitsipas or Nicolas Jarry in the Halle Open quarter-finals.

Play gets underway at around 4.30pm BST on Wednesday and will be contested over the best of three sets at the OWL Arena in Halle.
