When is the 2021 Miami Masters?
The 2021 Miami Open takes place from 24 March-4 April.
Men’s qualifying matches are played on Monday 22-Tuesday 23 March with main-draw men’s singles beginning on Wednesday 24 March.
Each day’s play at the Miami Masters consists of a day session and a night session. The day session usually begins at 11am local/14.00 GMT/15.00 BST, with the night session beginning at 7.30pm local/11.30pm GMT/12.30am BST (the UK switches from GMT to BST on Sunday 28 March).
There are night sessions every day of the tournament until the final weekend. On Saturday 3 April there are no men’s singles matches, as the women’s final is played on that day. On Sunday 4 April the men’s final takes place.
Miami Masters Players 2021
The nine Masters 1000 Series events on the ATP Tour calendar are mandatory for players who rank high enough to appear at them, but the Miami Masters – like Indian Wells, which immediately precedes it – is special, featuring as it does a 96-player draw with byes for the 32 seeds.
A player must therefore win six matches, or seven if he is unseeded, across the best part of two weeks to claim the Miami Masters title.
The rewards on offer are so exceptional that this is a hotly-contested event among the best players in the world. The titans of tennis will be even keener to return to Miami in 2021 after the 2020 edition of the Miami Masters was cancelled due to the global pandemic.
Roger Federer
Unable to defend his title in 2020 due to the cancellation of the tournament, Federer returns in 2021 as the last man to win the Miami Masters, having defeated Daniil Medvedev, Denis Shapovalov and John Isner to win his fourth title there in 2019.
Federer barely played in 2020 after shutting down his season in February to undergo multiple knee surgeries – but the last time he took an extended break like that, he returned to complete the Sunshine Double. Will he do the same in 2021?
Novak Djokovic
Only Andre Agassi has won as many Miami Masters titles as six-time champion Djokovic – can the Serb break the tie in 2021?
Currently the all-time Masters title leader with 36 to his credit, including Cincinnati and Rome during the troubled 2020 season, Djokovic has had poor results over the past couple of years in Miami but will be keen to shake that off and get back to winning ways.
Rafael Nadal
Oddly enough the Miami Masters is one Masters 1000 Series title Nadal has never won, although he has reached the final on no fewer than five occasions, most recently in 2017 when he finished runner-up to Federer.
Nadal’s adjustments to his game over the past few seasons to help him become more aggressive have paid dividends on hard courts, however, and he will very much be a threat to win Miami in 2021.
John Isner
Big-serving Isner became the first man outside the Big Four since compatriot Andy Roddick to win the Miami Masters when he claimed the title in 2018, defeating Alexander Zverev in the final.
Isner made the final again in 2019, falling short to Federer, and the former Wimbledon semifinalist plays some of his best tennis in Miami.
Alexander Zverev
A three-time Masters 1000 Series champion, Zverev reached his first Grand Slam final at the US Open in 2020 and has proven that he can produce some dazzling tennis at the Miami Masters, reaching the final in 2018.
Dominic Thiem
Austria’s Thiem became a Grand Slam champion in 2020 when he won the US Open and has made the final of the Nitto ATP Finals two years in a row as well as finishing runner-up at the French Open (twice) and the Australian Open.
Thiem won his first Masters 1000 Series title at Indian Wells in 2019 and could be capable of much when he brings his improved hard-court game to Miami in 2021.
Young Canadians and 2019 semifinalists Denis Shapovalov and Felix Auger-Aliassime will also be in the draw for the 2021 Miami Masters, alongside ATP Finals champion Daniil Medvedev, French Open semifinalist Diego Schwartzman and the rest of the ATP Tour’s top stars.
