Stefanos Tsitsipas and Borna Coric resume their bids for first titles of the season when they face off in the Italian Open Quarter-Finals.
Indeed, both players are aiming to land their maiden silverware of 2023, and whoever prevails here will certainly fancy their chances of ending that wait this weekend.
A beaten finalist in Melbourne and Barcelona, Tsitsipas is looking to go the extra step in Rome, where he was runner-up to Novak Djokovic 12 months ago.
The Greek is yet to drop a set so far in his victories over Nuno Borges, Lorenzo Sonego and Lorenzo Musetti, taking his win tally to 12 from 15 matches on clay this calendar year.
Tsitsipas also reached this stage at Monte Carlo and Madrid and faces a tough test in his quest to go further here, with Coric having won three of their four previous meetings.
That included last year’s Cincinnati final as well as their third-round showdown at the 2020 US Open, though Tsitsipas prevailed in their United Cup meeting earlier this season.
Coric has already reached a career milestone this fortnight as he recorded his 200th win when he overcame Thiago Monteiro in round two – becoming only the eighth man born in 1995 or later to do so.
The Croatian was forced to come from behind in that match as well as in his fourth-round victory over world number 135 Fabian Marozsan, who shocked Carlos Alcaraz in the previous round.
Nevertheless, it has been a timely upturn in fortunes for Coric, who had suffered four successive opening-round exits prior to his run to the Madrid semi-finals earlier this month.
A showdown with either Daniil Medvedev or Yannick Hanfmann awaits the winner in this year’s Italian Open semi-finals.
Play gets underway at around 7.30pm BST on Thursday and will be contested over the best of three sets at Foro Italico in Rome.
