So far, so good for Carlos Alcaraz as the defending Madrid champion looks to progress into the semi-finals by defeating Karen Khachanov at around 3pm UK time. 

The Spanish sensation is the short priced favourite for the match and showed in his last match against Alexander Zverev that he has the measure of these conditions now. There was definitely an adjustment period for Alcaraz as it looked like he might go out in the first round against Emil Ruusuvuori, but he was majestic against Zverev.

Khachanov is still inconsistent to an extent, but seems to be doing a good job of targeting his good performances for the biggest tournaments. His win against Andrey Rublev was really well fought out, something that Khachanov hasn’t had the reputation for in recent years.

The Russian is yet to win a set against Alcaraz. The pair met twice in last year’s clay court swing and the record was 5-0 in terms of sets won. Khachanov is in much better form this time round, but though he could win a set, Alcaraz should march on.
