The big boys are taking each other on now in the quarter-finals at ATP Monte Carlo as Daniil Medvedev takes on Holger Rune in an exciting match-up around 2pm UK time.
Daniil Medvedev is undoubtedly the form player of 2023. He has dominated the circuit since the Australian Open, losing only one match, the Indian Wells final, to an inspired Carlos Alcaraz.
Of course, all of the tournaments that he has attended this season have been on hard courts. Medvedev has had a tricky relationship with the red clay all throughout his career, but since he really elevated his game to the top level it has come more into focus that he could really do with getting the hang of clay court tennis.
Holger Rune is at the start of his career of course, but he is naturally adept to playing on clay. The Dane made his name by winning the 2019 French Open Boys title and then with a run of Challenger titles on clay in 2021.
The bookies make Rune the marginal favourite here and I am inclined to agree with that assessment. Medvedev had a really hard match last night into the late hours against Alexander Zverev with Rune enjoying a day off thanks to Matteo Berrettini’s withdrawal. That could make all the difference here.
