Two players who are desperate to improve their season fortunes meet in the opening round of the Western & Southern Open, Matteo Berrettini and Felix Auger Aliassime.
The Italian #2 was humbled by his countryman Jannik Sinner at the Canadian Open last week, and has yet to re-assert himself as a Top Ten player since his recent return from injury.
However, this pales into insignificance compared to the struggles of Felix Auger Aliassime. For a long time seen as one of the key players of the future, Auger Aliassime is in the midst of an annus horribilis. Having lost his last five in a row, the Canadian is now 13-13 win-loss for the year.
The person he doesn’t want to see across the net from him therefore is someone that he has lost to four out of five times previously, albeit two of those were at the Laver Cup so don’t count towards ranking points. The pair did meet in the Cincinnati tournament of 2021 though with Auger Aliassime emerging victorious on that occasion.
The Canadian has to emerge from his slump at some stage though and this could be the chance with Berrettini not at the top of his game either. Back Auger Aliassime to emerge victorious in three sets here.
The match gets under way from around 4.00pm BST (11am local time) and will be contested over the best of three sets.
