Top seed Daniil Medvedev will take on Benoit Paire in the opening round of the 2022 Mexican Open on Tuesday.
Medvedev has not played competitively since losing to Rafael Nadal in a thrilling five-set Australian Open final three weeks ago.
The Russian has spent some time away from the court, which means that he comes into this tournament physically recharged.
Medvedev has a good shot at becoming world number one for the first time if he manages to win the title here in Acapulco. Practically, he can still reach the top spot as long as he manages a better performance here in Acapulco than Novak Djokovic in Dubai.
Medvedev has won 13 of his last 15 matches on hard courts and he is the overwhelming favourite to win this clash against Paire.
Paire has lost eight of his last ten matches. In addition, the Frenchman was knocked out from the opening round in the recent tournaments on clay where he participated. Cordoba, Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro are the tournaments where he suffered first-round eliminations against Munar, Lajovic and Cerundolo respectively.
Paire has won just one set in his previous two meetings with Medvedev.
