Two heavyweights and Grand Slam champions meet in the final of ATP Doha 2023 on Saturday as Andy Murray faces Daniil Medvedev.
Murray, as always, has progressed through the tournament the hard way. Every match has gone to three sets, two of which decided in final set tie-breaks, including the Semi-Final against Jiri Lehecka.
In that contest, Murray saved five match points, including from 40-0 down at 5-4 in the final set. The two-time Wimbledon champion still possesses that elite mentality.
The former world number one, who won this title back-to-back in 2008 and 2009, received a wildcard into this year’s tournament and has taken full advantage, also defeating Lorenzo Sonego, Alexander Zverev and Alexandre Müller along the way.
Murray, 35, is through to his fifth final in Doha and is bidding to secure a first title since Antwerp in 2019.
Medvedev, meanwhile, is on a seven match winning streak and this is his second final in a matter of weeks after lifting the Rotterdam title last week.
The Russian ace has had an easier route through and is beginning to display the form that took him to a US Open title in 2021.
Medvedev, who has won both of his previous meetings with Murray on hard court, defeated Great Britain’s Liam Broady in his opener, before edging out Christopher O’Connell in a deciding set and going on to dispatch second seed Félix Auger-Aliassime in straight sets.
The 27-year-old, who was world number one this time last year, is vying for a 17th career title and is competing in his 29th final.
The final gets under way from 3pm GMT (6pm local time) and will be contested over the best of three sets.
