Stan Wawrinka and Roberto Carballes Baena face off for the second time in as many weeks for a place in the Croatia Open Umag semi-finals.

The pair went head to head in Gstaad last time out, with Wawrinka prevailing after Carballes Baena was forced to retire injured during the second set.

Fast forward a week and the two players will lock horns once more with a place in the last four at stake.

Both are yet to drop a set thus far. Sixth seed Wawrinka has seen off Filip Misolic and Federico Coria 6-3, 6-2 and 7-5, 6-1 respectively while fourth seed Carballes Baena, who received a bye through the opening round, defeated Taro Daniel 6-3, 6-1.

The Swiss, who was champion here 17 years ago, has matched his best performance of the season, having also reached the quarter-finals in Rotterdam and Marseille.

But he will undoubtedly be looking to better that with victory over his Spanish opponent, who is appearing at this stage for only the second time in 2023.

Although, Carballes Baena’s only previous such venture culminated in him lifting the trophy in Marrakech, and the world number 59 will hope that serves as a positive omen once more here.

The winner of this match will play either Lorenzo Sonego or Jaume Munar in the Croatia Open Umag semi-finals.

Play gets underway at around 8.30pm BST on Friday and will be contested over the best of three sets at Goran Ivanisevic Stadion.
