Stan Wawrinka locks horns with Tomas Machac in the second round of the Nordic Open in Stockholm on Thursday.

We can expect an intriguing contest between the three-time grand slam winner and a player fresh from back-to-back Challenger Tour titles.

A recent runner-up in Umag, Wawrinka has also reached the last 32 at Wimbledon and the US Open this season.

Although, the Swiss arrived in Stockholm having lost each of his four matches since Flushing Meadows.

However, he ended that unwanted streak with a straight-sets victory in the opening round, defeating Borna Gojo 7-5, 6-4.

That will stand him in good stead ahead of his first ever meeting with lucky loser Machac, who was initially beaten by Dino Prizmic in the second qualifying round.

Despite reaching the quarter-finals in Houston, the world number 81 has enjoyed greater success on the Challenger Tour this season.

Indeed, he was a finalist in Prostejov and Cassis earlier in the campaign, but landed two titles in successive weeks in Orleans and Mouilleron le Captif at the start of October.

As a result, Wawrinka will certainly have his work cut out in this contest, which really could go either way and may even go the distance.

The winner of this match will play Laslo Djere in the Nordic Open quarter-finals.

Play gets under way at around 5pm BST and will be contested over the best of three sets at Kungliga Tennishallen in Stockholm.
