About Olympic Tennis
Tennis was one of the events at the inaugural Summer Olympic Games held in Athens in 1896, but was dropped from the programme in 1924 as authorities disagreed on how to guarantee amateur status.
The Open Era of tennis, in which the sport was professionalised, began in 1969 but it was not until the 1988 Olympics in Seoul that tennis returned to the Summer Games, with Steffi Graf and Miroslav Mecir winning the gold medals in women’s and men’s singles respectively.
It has remained part of the Olympic Games programme since then, and generally been played on hard courts – the only exceptions were Barcelona 1992, when the tennis event was played on clay; and London 2012, when the tennis was played on the grass courts of the All-England Club, home of Wimbledon. Mixed doubles was added to the Olympic tennis programme for London 2012.
Olympic tennis has taken various different formats. Currently, it features a 64-player draw for both men’s and women’s singles, with byes for the top eight seeds; a 32-team draw for men’s and women’s doubles; and a 16-team draw for mixed doubles. All singles matches are the best of three sets except for the men’s gold medal match, which is the best of five sets. In doubles, a match tie-break (first to ten points) is played instead of a third set.
Players qualify for the Olympic tennis event based primarily on the ATP and WTA Tour rankings as of 7 June 2021. To be eligible, players must have met certain criteria for representing their nations in Davis or Fed Cup during the previous four years. Nations are limited to four players in men’s and women’s singles.
The most successful Olympic tennis players are Serena and Venus Williams, who have each won a record four gold medals, one each in singles and three in doubles as a pairing. Andy Murray is the only player to have won two singles gold medals. A player who wins all four Grand Slams in one year plus Olympic gold is said to have completed a ‘Golden Slam’. To date, only Steffi Graf has accomplished this feat.
Because the Olympics are only held once every four years, Olympic gold eludes many of even the greatest players. While Murray has won gold twice, at London 2012 and Rio 2016, and Rafael Nadal won singles gold at Beijing 2008, neither Roger Federer nor Novak Djokovic has won a singles gold medal. Federer won a gold medal in men’s doubles at Beijing 2008 alongside Stan Wawrinka.
Federer, Murray, Caroline Wozniacki and Fernando Gonzalez of Chile are among tennis players who have proudly carried the flag for their nation at the Opening Ceremony over the years,
Men’s tennis at Rio 2016 was notable for the performance of Juan Martin del Potro, a bronze medalist at London 2012. Del Potro defeated both Djokovic and Nadal on his way to the men’s final where he was eventually defeated by Murray in four sets. Kei Nishikori of Japan claimed the bronze medal, defeating Nadal in the bronze medal match.
