Andy Murray is aiming to end his losing streak against Matteo Berrettini when they clash in the First Round of the Australian Open on Tuesday.
A mouth-watering opening-round tie – though one neither player would have particularly wanted – pits the five-time runner-up against last year’s semi-finalist on Rod Laver Arena.
Murray is gearing up for his 15th appearance in the main draw at Melbourne Park, where he was a beaten finalist in 2010, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2016.
Now ranked 66th in the world, the three-time grand slam champion continues to plug away on the ATP Tour, reaching finals in Sydney and Stuttgart last season.
And he is set for his 64th match in the season’s opening major, while he is targeting a 50th win on only his third appearance in the past six editions.
However, the 35-year-old arrives having only played once this term – a straight-sets defeat against eventual runner-up Sebastian Korda in Adelaide.
By contrast, Berrettini has already chalked up top-10 victories over Casper Ruud and Hubert Hurkacz on the way to helping Italy reach the final at the inaugural United Cup.
The world number 14 has also prevailed in each of his last three meetings with Murray – most recently in the US Open third round four months ago – as well as in the Stuttgart showpiece, and on the way to winning at Queen’s in 2021.
Berrettini went on to reach the Wimbledon final that year. He has reached the quarter-finals or better in each of his last five grand slam appearances.
That record could have been even better had he not missed last year’s French Open through injury, before a positive COVID-19 test ruled him at SW19.
The winner of this match will play either Thanasi Kokkinakis or Fabio Fognini in the Australian Open second round later this week.
Play gets underway at around 3.30am GMT on Tuesday and will be contested over the best of five sets on Rod Laver Arena.
