Novak Djokovic captured a perfect 10th Australian Open crown after defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets on Sunday.

The Serb maintained his 100 per cent record in Melbourne finals after prevailing 6-3, 7-6(4), 7-6(5) in just under three hours to move level with Rafael Nadal on 22 grand slam triumphs.

Djokovic, who controversially missed out on the season’s maiden slam after his deportation from Australia 12 months ago, also ensured his return to world number one.

The 35-year-old became only the third player after Nadal (14 at the French Open) and Margaret Court (11 at the Australian Open) to win the same grand slam event on 10 or more occasions.

Djokovic’s showdown with 24-year-old Tsitsipas represented the largest age gap in a men’s singles final at Melbourne Park in the Open Era.

The Serb had won their last nine meetings including a remarkable turnaround from two sets down in their previous major championship match at the 2021 French Open.

But Djokovic, who had dropped just one set all fortnight, was quicker out of the blocks this time around; breaking in the fourth game after an untimely Tsitsipas double fault on the way to taking the opener in 36 minutes.

Seeking a maiden Slam in his first Australian Open final, the Greek made a statement of intent with back-to-back love holds at the start of the second set.

But he could not break the serve of Djokovic, who gained the upper hand in the eventual tie-break to double his lead.

The fourth seed appeared to hand Tsitsipas a lifeline when he was broken at the start of the third.

However, he responded immediately and lost just two points on serve thereon as another tie-break ensued.

Tsitsipas, who hit 15 aces to his opponent’s seven, dug deep to save two championship points, but was powerless to deny a relentless Djokovic with a long forehand sealing a perfect 10th crown.
