Novak Djokovic looks to maintain his dominant record over Grigor Dimitrov when they face off in the Australian Open Third Round on Saturday.
The Serb has prevailed in nine of his 10 previous encounters with the Bulgarian, though their most recent encounter came nearly four years ago at the 2019 Paris Masters.
Djokovic will hope to have shaken off a hamstring issue in time for the clash, having required a medical timeout during his second-round victory over Enzo Couacaud.
Though pegged back by the Frenchman in the second set, the nine-time champion recovered to eventually run out a commanding 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-0 winner. That came after a dominant 6-3, 6-4, 6-0 success over Roberto Carballes Baena in round one.
Having already claimed silverware at the Adelaide International earlier this month, Djokovic will look to continue building momentum in his quest for a record-extending 10th title, and a potential return to world number one.
With his superior Australian Open and head-to-head record, he is a heavy favourite to overcome the challenge posed by Dimitrov.
Although, the Bulgarian boasts a decent record in the season’s maiden slam, having reached the 2017 semi-finals and a further three quarter-finals.
The 27th seed is also yet to drop a set in Melbourne this fortnight. First, he saw off 2021 semi-finalist Aslan Karatsev 7-6(3), 7-5, 6-2, before a dominant 6-3, 6-2, 6-0 rout of Laslo Dere.
However, he knows will be in for a much sterner challenger when he locks horns with Djokovic.
The winner of this match will play either Alex de Minaur or Benjamin Bonzi in the Australian Open fourth round.
Play gets underway at 8am GMT on Saturday and will be contested over the best of five sets on Rod Laver Arena.
