Novak Djokovic looks to maintain his perfect Australian Open semi-final record when he faces Tommy Paul on Friday.
The nine-time champion locks horns with the first-time semi-finalist for the right to play either Stefanos Tsitsipas or Karen Khachanov in Sunday’s championship match.
Despite struggling with a hamstring issue during the earlier rounds, it has been very much business as usual for Djokovic.
The Serb has only lost a single set in Melbourne this year – that coming during his second-round victory over Enzo Couacaud – while he dropped just 12 games across his commanding straight-set wins over home favourite Alex de Minaur and fifth seed Andrey Rublev.
Djokovic has now won each of his last 26 main-draw matches at Melbourne Park, equalling the Open Era record set by Andre Agassi between 2000 and 2004.
And he is now looking to make it 10 wins from 10 semi-final appearance at the season’s opening major, before what he hopes will be a 10th victory in 10 finals that culminates in a return to the summit of the ATP rankings.
His opponent has already made great strides in the rankings, having marched into uncharted territory this fortnight.
Indeed, world number 35 Paul arrived in Melbourne having narrowly missed out on being seeded. However, he is set to climb into the world’s top 20 for the first time after reaching his maiden semi-final at a slam.
The American has taken out Spanish seeds Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Roberto Bautista Agut along the way, as well as compatriots Jenson Brooksby and Ben Shelton to become the first player from his nation to reach the men’s singles semi-finals at this event since Andy Roddick in 2009.
Play gets underway at around 8.30am GMT on Friday and will be contested over the best of five sets on Rod Laver Arena.
