Emma Raducanu bowed out of the Australian Open following a 4-6, 6-4, 3-6 defeat by Danka Jovinic in the second round on Thursday.

Though appearing to be struggling with her striking hand, the recently crowned US Open champion put up a valiant fight to respond to losing the opening set by forcing a decider on Margaret Court.

But there was to be no fairytale ending for the teenage sensation at Melbourne Park as her opponent eventually prevailed; becoming the first player from Montenegro to reach the third round of a Slam.

Raducanu’s compatriot Andy Murray also exited the competition; the five-time Australian Open runner-up going down in straight sets 4-6, 4-6, 4-6 against Japan’s Taro Daniel.

Garbine Muguruza and Anett Kontaveit were the highest-seeded players to be eliminated from the Ladies’ draw. Third seed Muguruza suffered a straight-sets defeat at the hands of Alize Cornet, as did sixth seed Kontaveit against Clara Tauson. Although, second seed Aryna Sabalenka recovered from losing the opening set to deny Wang Xinyu.

Meanwhile, Diego Schwartzman also bowed out; the 13th seed beaten 6-7(6), 4-6, 4-6 by local favourite Chris O’Connell.

Elsewhere, top seed Daniil Medvedev held his nerve against Nick Kyrgios to prevail in four sets, as did French Open runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas and US Open semi-finalist Felix Auger-Aliassime over Sebastian Baez and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina respectively.

A quarter-finalist here last year, fifth seed Andrey Rublev was a straight-sets winner over Ricardis Berankis, while Jannik Sinner also reeled off three sets without reply against Steve Johnson.

Sam Stosur said farewell to Grand Slam tennis; the former world number four going down 2-6, 2-6 against Roland Garros runner-up Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, while seventh seed Iga Swiatek overcame Rebecca Peterson by the same scoreline.

Roberto Bautista Agut dropped just four games as he put Philip Kohlschreiber to the sword 6-1, 6-0, 6-3, as 2018 runner-up Marin Cilic saw off Norbert Gombos in four sets.
