Nick Kyrgios and Daniil Medvedev will square off on Thursday in the most anticipated match of the Second Round of the 2022 Australian Open.
Kyrgios has lost five matches in a row on hard courts towards the end of 2021, but registered his first victory of 2022 against Liam Broady in the opening round of the Australian Open 2022. Last year, Kyrgios has suffered a dramatic 3-2 loss against Dominic Thiem here in Melbourne, despite being two sets up.
Kyrgios wasn’t able to compete at the Sydney International after testing positive for COVID-19, but he looked sharp in the opening round against Broady. Nick prevailed in straight sets and delighted the crowd with his usual trick shots.
Meanwhile, Medvedev managed a comfortable 3-0 victory over Laaksonen in the opening round, although he needed a tiebreaker in the third set. The Russian is currently on a four-match winning streak on hard courts while dropping just one set in the process.
As mentioned, the Russian had an impressive 2021 during which he managed to win his first Grand Slam title at the US Open. He is now the favourite to win the Australian Open after Novak Djokovic’s departure.
