Andy Murray aims to continue his remarkable run at the Australian Open when he faces Roberto Bautista Agut in the Third Round on Saturday.
The five-time runner-up and former world number one has already spent 10 hours on court this week, demonstrating his trademark tenacity and determination by coming through two epic five-setters.
The chance to defeat 13th seed Matteo Berrettini in the opening round after the Italian overturned a two-set deficit to take the contest the distance. However, Murray dug deep to eventually prevail 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 6-7, 7-6.
He then trailed home favourite Thanasi Kokkinakis by two sets in a second-round clash that lasted five hours and 45 minutes – the longest match of his illustrious career. But he hit back to advance 4-6, 6-7, 7-6, 6-3, 7-5 at 4am local time.
The 35-year-old is now looking to reach round four here for the 11th time in 15 appearances, but has lost each of his last three meetings with Bautista Agut.
That included a thrilling first-round encounter in this event four years ago, when a struggling Murray revealed it could be the final match of his career due to a persistent hip injury.
The Spaniard, who dropped just six games across their two meetings in Doha and Basel last year, is the highest seed remaining in the bottom quarter of the draw, having come through a five-setter himself in round two.
After opening with a straight-sets win over Joao Sousa, he went the distance before eventually seeing off Brandon Holt 4-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.
Bautista Agut now looks to reach round four at Melbourne Park for the first time since his run to the 2019 Quarter-Finals.
An American opponent awaits the winner of this match in the Australian Open fourth round, with Tommy Paul and Jenson Brooksby set to lock horns.
The match gets underway at 8am GMT on Saturday and will be contested over the best of five sets in the Margaret Court Arena.
