Rafael Nadal has seen his Australian Open hopes end in the second round with a hip injury leading to a straight set defeat to Mackenzie McDonald.
Nadal pulled up with a hip problem when he was already a set down, resulting in a medical time out. Although Nadal battled on, he was unable to perform at his best and failed to push McDonald hard enough.
It was a harsh end to the Spaniard’s Grand Slam campaign, especially after the latter half of his 2022 season was also blighted by injury and questions will now be raised as to whether his time at the very top of the game may be coming to an end.
