Rafael Nadal continues the defence of his Australian Open title with a Second Round tie against Mackenzie McDonald on Wednesday.

Nadal staged a remarkable recovery from two sets down to defeat Daniil Medvedev in an unforgettable final last year, and the 36-year-old will put the trophy on the line in the Rod Laver Arena once again.

In winning the title here 12 months ago, the Spaniard broke the all-time men’s major singles titles record, landing his second Australian Open crown and becoming the most successful player in the modern era.

Nadal, who went on to claim a 14th French title later in the year, returns Down Under as the number one seed and in search of Grand Slam title number 23.

Fitness, however, remained a concern for Nadal as he entered the new calendar year with back-to-back defeats at the hands of Cameron Norrie and Alex de Minaur in the recent United Cup.

However, he avoided an unwanted hat-trick by overcoming British youngster Jack Draper in four sets in the opening round on Monday.

Nadal has never lost in the Second Round in Melbourne and is huge favourite to protect that perfect record by denying McDonald one of the biggest results of his career.

The American is world ranked 65 and his joint best run in a Grand Slam came here two years ago when he reached the Fourth Round before losing out to Daniil Medvedev.

The 2021 Citi Open runner-up held his nerve to edge out compatriot Brandon Nakashima in a marathon five-set battle on Day One, having taken the first two sets before being pegged back.

His only previous meeting with Nadal came in the Last 64 of the 2020 French Open, where the ‘King of Clay’ stormed to victory for the loss of just four games.

Their latest encounter gets under way from approximately 3.30am GMT and will be available to watch live online via the link below.

Either Dalibor Svrčina or Yoshihito Nishioka will await the winner in the Third Round later in the week.
