Home favourite Nick Kyrgios faces an ‘Ashes’ battle with Great Britain’s Liam Broady in Round One of the 2022 Australian Open on Tuesday.

Kyrgios goes into the match as 1/2 favourite with Bet365 (Brady 13/8) despite a far from ideal preparation for the tournament.

The enigmatic Aussie withdrew from the Melbourne Summer Set due to asthma then tested positive for COVID-19, forcing him to pull out of the Sydney International.

The 26-year-old, who ended his 2021 campaign in late September due to a knee injury, last played a competitive match at the US Open – where he was beaten by Roberto Bautista Agut in Round One.

Kyrgios, a quarter-finalist here in 2015, reached the Third Round last year and the same stage at Wimbledon, notably defeating Ugo Humbert in Round One before eventually having to withdraw through injury at one set apiece against Félix Auger-Aliassime.

He is bidding to end a five-match losing streak and will be determined to do so in front of a vocal and partisan Melbourne crowd.

Broady, meanwhile, is aiming to maintain the feel-good factor around British tennis at present following Emma Raducanu’s remarkable US Open triumph and Andy Murray’s recent resurgence.

The world number 127 is much the sharper of the two, having won three qualifying matches to book his place in the main draw – his first appearance in the Australian Open and sixth Grand Slam to date.

The 2021 Davis Cup quarter-finalist picked up an ATP Challenger title in Switzerland last September and is now hoping to mark a dream debut at Melbourne Park by silencing the Aussie crowd for his third win in a Grand Slam since 2015.

The match gets under way from around 8am GMT, with either US Open champion Daniil Medvedev or Henri Laaksonen awaiting the winner in the Second Round later in the week.
