Jessica Pegula and Victoria Azarenka go head to head on Tuesday for a place in the Semi-Finals of the Australian Open.
This will be the fifth and undoubtedly the most important meeting between the players seeded third and 24th in Melbourne respectively.
Pegula won their previous showdown in this tournament – a straight-sets victory in the 2021 opening round – while she was a 7-6(3), 6-1 winner in their most recent clash in last year’s Guadalajara semi-finals.
Although, Azarenka has prevailed in both of their quarter-final encounters – at Berlin and Indian Wells two years ago.
Third seed Pegula has reeled off eight sets without reply to reach the last eight at Melbourne Park for the third year in succession.
One of only two players yet to drop a set en route to the quarter-finals – along with Aryna Sabalenka – the American is now targeting her maiden appearance in a grand slam semi-final.
Her straight-sets win over former French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova means she is now 5-0 in round four at majors, but she is currently 0-4 in quarter-finals – something she will desperately want to address here.
Standing in the way is the only remaining former winner in Azarenka, who is appearing in the last eight for the first time since 2016.
The two-time champion is set for her sixth Australian Open quarter-final, going on to lift the trophy on both occasions that she prevailed from this stage in 2012 and 2013.
Azarenka has been forced to dig deep to secure her return to the final eight in Melbourne. Indeed, she recovered from losing the opening set to deny Madison Keys in round three, before repeating the feat in her fourth-round triumph over Zhu Lin.
The winner of this match will play either Elena Rybakina or Jelena Ostapenko in the Australian Open semi-finals.
Play gets underway at 8am GMT on Tuesday and will be contested over the best of three sets on Rod Laver Arena.
