Emma Raducanu will be looking for a place in the Third Round at the Australian Open for the first time in her career when she takes on Danka Kovinic on Thursday.
Kovinic has been struggling for consistency towards the end of 2021 and her recent results were far from good. She has lost 11 of her last 15 matches on hard courts, including three defeats in this early stage of 2022.
After two consecutive defeats against out-of-form opponents such as Watson and Inglis in Melbourne and Adelaide, Danka has finally managed to get a win. The Montenegrin played a 189-minute marathon to defeat the qualifier Jang Su Jeon in three sets.
It is also worth mentioning that Danka is yet to win a WTA title and has never reached the 3rd round of any Grand Slam.
It has been a while since Raducanu’s fairy-tale run at the US Open where she managed to lift the crown as a qualifier. The teenager has been relatively inconsistent since, having been knocked out in the opening round at Indian Wells, Third Round at Cluj Napoca, First Round at Linz and Sydney.
However, we must say that Raducanu looked pretty solid in the opening round of the Australian Open 2022. She met a former US Open champion in the shape of Sloane Stephens and managed to get a three-set victory in 1 hour and 46 minutes.
