Daniel Evans looks to match his best grand slam performance when he faces Andrey Rublev in the Australian Open third round on Saturday.

The 25th seed is aiming to reach the last 16 at a major for only the third time – matching his run to that stage here six years ago, while he also made round four at Wimbledon in 2021.

Evans defeated world number seven Marin Cilic during that 2017 run, though that remains his only win over a top-10 opponent at a major in seven attempts.

Nevertheless, he will hope that represents a positive omen heading into this showdown, which he accomplished following a four-set victory over Facundo Bagnis, before defeating Jeremy Chardy in straight sets.

Evans has shared his six previous showdowns with Rublev, who has also dropped just a single set across his two matches so far.

The fifth seed arrived in Melbourne low on confidence following successive first-round exits at the Adelaide International events.

However, he bounced back with a commanding straight-sets victory over 2020 runner-up Dominic Thiem, before putting Emil Ruusuvuori to the sword 6-2, 6-4, 6-7(2), 6-3.

A quarter-finalist here in 2021, Rublev is now one win away from reaching the fourth round in Melbourne for the third time, and remaining on course for a potential last-eight showdown with nine-time champion Novak Djokovic.

The winner of this match will play either Holger Rune or Ugo Humbert in the Australian Open fourth round.

Play gets underway at around 2am GMT on Saturday and will be contested over the best of five sets on Margaret Arena.
