Andrey Rublev is targeting his maiden victory of 2023 when he plays Dominic Thiem in the Australian Open first round on Tuesday.
The fifth seed and 2020 runner-up collide on John Cain Arena in one of the standout ties of the opening round in Melbourne.
Rublev enjoyed a successful 2022 season as he triumphed in Marseille, Dubai, Belgrade and Gijon – with only Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic (both five) winning more titles on the ATP Tour – while he was also a quarter-finalist at Roland Garros and Flushing Meadows.
Although, the world number six has endured a slow start to 2023 thus far, losing his opening match in both events in Adelaide earlier this month.
Nevertheless, the 2021 quarter-finalist will be favourite to progress beyond the first round here having prevailed in each of his last four meetings with Thiem, going on to reach the respective final on three occasions (winning twice).
However, the Austrian certainly boasts impressive grand slam pedigree. Runner-up to Novak Djokovic here in 2020, he went on to lift the US Open title later that year, while he is also a two-time French Open finalist.
But an untimely wrist injury prevented Thiem from continuing to build on that momentum as he missed large periods of 2021 and 2022, while slipping to 98th in the ATP rankings.
Though he failed to qualify for the Adelaide International – losing to Soonwoo Kwon – the 29-year-old did end last season by reaching consecutive semi-finals in Antwerp and Gijon, where he was beaten by eventual champion Rublev.
The winner of this match will play either Max Purcell or Emil Ruusuvuori in the Australian Open second round later this week.
Play gets underway at 12am GMT on Tuesday with the match contested over the best of five sets at Melbourne Park.
