Elena Rybakina and Jelena Ostapenko look to extend their ground-breaking runs when they collide in the Australian Open Quarter-Finals on Tuesday.

A place in the last four at Melbourne Park is up for grabs when the players seeded 22nd and 17th respectively go head to head on Rod Laver Arena.

Indeed, both players arrived at the season’s opening major having never previously progressed beyond round three, but are now just three wins away from lifting the trophy.

Rybakina is the first Kazakh woman to reach the quarter-finals in Melbourne, while Ostapenko is the first Latvian woman to achieve the feat.

Both subsequently enter this last-eight showdown fresh from impressive straight-set victories, in which they also achieved notable firsts.

Former French Open winner Ostapenko, who has dropped just one set on the way to her first grand slam quarter-final since reaching the Wimbledon semi-finals in 2018, clinched her first top-10 triumph at a hard-court major as she cast aside seventh seed Coco Gauff.

Meanwhile Wimbledon champion Rybakina, who overcame 2022 Australian Open runner-up Danielle Collins in round three, enjoyed her maiden victory over a reigning world number one by claiming the huge scalp of tournament favourite Iga Swiatek.

With both players in uncharted territory and full of momentum, it promises to be an exciting encounter with a place in the last four up for grabs.

ALthough, Ostapenko has prevailed in straight sets in both of their previous encounters; enjoying a commanding 6-4, 6-1 success at the 2021 Eastbourne semi-finals two years after winning 7-5, 6-1 at this stage in Linz.

The winner of this match will play either third seed Jessica Pegula or two-time champion Victoria Azarenka in the Australian Open semi-finals.

Play gets underway at around 1.30am GMT on Tuesday and will be contested over the best of three sets on Rod Laver Arena.
