Stefanos Tsitsipas v Karen Khachanov live stream | Australian Open Semi-Final preview
Stefanos Tsitsipas and Karen Khachanov go head to head for the first spot in the 2023 Australian Open final on Friday.
The third and 18th seeds lock horns in the first of two mouth-watering semi-finals in the maiden Slam of the season, with Novak Djokovic or Tommy Paul awaiting the winner in Sunday’s championship match.
Tsitsipas is appearing at this stage for the third successive year – and fourth overall – with the 24-year-old becoming the youngest male to achieve the feat at Melbourne Park since Roger Federer between 2004 and 2006.
The Greek is hoping to finally end his wait for major silverware this weekend, while he would also move to the summit of the ATP rankings for the first time.
The 2021 French Open runner-up is certainly in the form to do so, having dropped only two sets in his five matches so far, while saving an impressive 43 of the 49 break points he has faced.
His straight-sets victory over Jiri Lehecka last time out saw him become only the fourth male of the Open Era to remain unbeaten in his first six grand slam quarter-finals – after Rod Laver, Pat Rafter and Andre Agassi. Although, he must now improve his 0-3 record in the last four of this tournament
Nevertheless, Tsitsipas boasts a 100 per cent strike rate against Khachanov, having prevailed in all five of their previous encounters.
The 26-year-old is appearing in back-to-back major semi-finals, having also reached this stage at the US Open in September.
Khachanov, who would climb to a career-high seventh in the ATP rankings should he lift the trophy, has defeated Frances Tiafoe, Yoshihito Nishioka and Sebastian Korda during his ground-breaking run in Melbourne.
And he will arguably be the fresher of the two players, following Korda’s retirement through injury during the third set of that quarter-final victory.
Play gets underway at around 3.30am GMT on Friday and will be contested over the best of five sets on Rod Laver Arena.
