Zverev sails into Australian Open third round as Barty and Osaka progress
Alexander Zverev sailed through to the Australian Open third round with a commanding straight-sets victory over John Millman.
The Olympic gold medallist resumed his quest for a maiden Slam by comprehensively sweeping the home favourite aside 6-4, 6-4, 6-0 on Laver.
In the absence of nine-time champion Novak Djokovic, Zverev will climb to the top of the ATP rankings should he go all the way at Melbourne Park this fortnight.
A semi-finalist here two years ago, the third seed is yet to drop a set after wrapping up victory in just under two hours, hitting 14 aces along the way.
Like Zverev, Rafael Nadal has also reeled off six sets without reply after putting Yannick Hanfmann to the sword 6-2, 6-3, 6-4.
Champion here in 2009, the sixth seed is the only former winner in the men’s draw this year as he seeks a record-breaking 21st Slam.
Top seed Ashleigh Barty has dropped just three games in her opening two matches; the home favourite breezing past Lucia Bronzetti 6-1, 6-1.
Reigning champion Naomi Osaka also made it four sets without reply as the two-time winner saw off Madison Brengle 6-0, 6-4.
The same can be said of Barbora Krejcikova and Maria Sakkari. French Open winner Krejcikova overcame Wang Xiyu 6-2, 6-3, as two-time Slam semi-finalist Sakkari was a 6-1, 6-4 victor against Zhang Qinwen.
Elsewhere, Wimbledon runner-up Matteo Berrettini beat Stefan Kozlov 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, while Denis Shapovalov and Cristian Garin required deciding sets to see off Kwon Soon-woo and Pedro Martinez respectively.
Two-time champion Victoria Azarenka defeated Jil Teichmann in straight sets, with eighth seed Paula Badosa repeating the feat against Martina Trevisan.
Although, there was no joy for Olympic gold medallist Belinda Bencic, who lost 2-6, 7-5 to Amanda Anisimova, while Wimbledon semi-finalist Hubert Hurkacz was also ousted in straight sets by Adrian Mannarino.
